cow elk draw in wmu 522
Super stoked about getting drawn for cow elk in wmu 522, been a couple years since the last time I was up their for elk. Last time nailed a great tasting cow elk. Going up sept 20th to the 28th. With my brothers and my nephew. Going hard for elk but hoping to get my first black bear.

Look for oat fields, ask for permission and walk the field boundaries the last hour of legal light. I have an acreage/ cabin in 522. Lots of bears around

Ya, with permission you will do well.
We hunted that area for 16-17 yrs.
Without permission it can be tough, you will be hunting the valley slopes or the Birch hills bush.

I did prefer the bow season up there.
Got a lot closer to elk from Sept 1-15 then I did after the 17th.

Thinking of hunting around the birch hills uplands conservation site had good luck their before. Also thinking of checking out the north fox creek, and try to follow the creek to the river. Thinking of going up in august and checking things out and setting up a couple trail cams, and talking to a few farmers. I was thru their a few weeks ago on a service call and all I saw was one black bear. If anyone knows of farmers who are having elk, deer, or bear problems I would be happy to help.

Get a land owners map and make some inquiries. You will find that the land north of the fox creek is owned by Danescott ranching. They don't allow hunting.
You would do well to call f and w in spirit river and ask if they have a list of names of land owners that want the elk shot. The problem is the elk aren't an issue until November to when the snow melts.

Was allowed on Danescott land just once, was when they first bought all that land up 6-7 yrs back, 30 quarters if I recall.
Now they have all the lease around too, 20+ more quarters, so now you need to play the lease land permission game with them to access the lease land.

Our "Public access to Lease Land " system is on the hunters side, isn't it ?
I've always thought of it as a system where hunters notify lease holders that you are entering. Yes asking is what you are doing, but if they BS you with excuses of too many hunters in etc...
The public access land mgr will clue in quickly if constant denial reasons are BS.
