Thumbs up Very rare sight Sudden ice break up on the Saskatchewan River shows nature's power

Ice melting on the river sparked this rarely seen surge of breaking ice on May 1, 2013 near Nipawin, Sask. It was captured from the air by the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency and shared with The Globe and Mail

That's probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen .

Cool. My grandparents used to live in that valley before they flooded it back in the '80s. My granddad operated the ferry crossing on the Sask. there. Brings back memories. Good fishing there as well, just upstream from Tobin.

VERY cool!

That bottom structure is going to look a lot different when that's all said and done.

Funny thing, I lived within a mile of the Peace River for the first half of my life and never actually saw the ice go out.

My dad described watching an event very like that on the Peace. He talked about the ground trembling under his feet and 100 foot wide pieces of three foot thick ice standing on edge by the power of the water.

But it seems that such events are indeed rare. I know that most breakups are somewhat subdued in comparison. Neighbours who witnessed the ice going out on the Peace talked about the whole ice cover starting to move very slowly, with a whisper then moving faster and faster and breaking into small pans. And they described a low rumble as the speed of the ice increased to the speed of the water.

Too bad the video didn't capture the sound. I am sure it would have been deafening.

Default ice breakup

Was down on the NSR a couple years ago when the ice broke. Sounded like a jet/thunder/D8 cat falling from the sky all at once. I thought a fighter jet crashed, crazy loud. Thought my life was over. Then noticed a huge chunk of ice starting to float downstream. Pretty neat
