when the weeds are reaching almost to the surface theres nothing like a buzzbait dragged across the lake to get them going, they get pretty vicious on them. spinnerbaits can be used on top as well and dont hang up. the frogs as well are a lot of fun.

I'll second buzz baits, however I have never caught anything BIG on them. I would also try a Suick. Can buy them in different sizes but the 8" version is what I use. Jerk it and it dives about a 1' under the surface, then pause and let it float up just till it breaks the surface, then jerk again so it splashes. I have taken many large pike on these.

I have a matzuo frog and it gets interest but I was disappointed in how easily it got sliced open by the pikes teeth. I also get lots of strikes that the hook doesn't set on which is kind of frustrating at times.

Do the live target models hold up any better and have better hook sets? To me they look like they are pretty similar and I can't bring myself to pay over $10 for a lure that I will be lucky to use effectively for more then one day of fishing.

The hollow frog and the mouse if you put then in hot water for a while when you first get them it softens the rubber a little and will improve hook set. larger pike will take a toll on the bodies but not extremely bad.

So back when I was younger, I got a chance to work/fish on the North Seal River system and fish for walleye, grayling, lakers and pike. Avg day was 150 fish give or take a few (Mixed species).

The customers were always complaining about the pike damaging or breaking their Rebels/Rapalas or other expensive lures, so one night over a few beers, another guide and myself came up with the ultimate, cheap pike lure. We took a section of 6-8" of 3/4-1" yellow nylon rope, weaved through a SS leader with 2 6.0 trebels attached and pinched on some lead weight, depending on if you wanted top water or just under the surface. Cast out and jerk/swim it just like the Spook or other top water lure. If you want it to be just under the surface, add the weight and get it to slowly sink.

We played with melting the front to get it to swim, but the pike did not really care, they hit it whether it was still, jerked, dragged or sinking.

Cheap, easy to make and it really worked.

Cheers

SS

Default MR.Twister

Mr.Twister top prop. I like the chartreuse with orange and black stripes. I tip with a 6" plastic worm, have had good luck with bright green, clear chartreuse and black.

They are loud and a top water and absolute blast to watch the pike hit them.

The Rebel BuzznFrog, posted by newLT is also fun as it flies thru the air when the pike hit. Price is a bit more reasonable for you as well.

I've had a Buzzn Frog in my tackle box for at least 15 years, and still haven't had enough patience to throw it enough times to catch a fish on it. Looks cool flopping around in the water though.

I have had to re-purchase this one about 10-15 times because it gets so thrashed from pike smashing it on the top. It works great on slow retrieve, quick retrieve, stop and go... I like to throw it right at shore with 30+lb braid and a titanium leader.

Got a few 35+ inch fish on this hook in one day last season alone.

Default My Buzzfrog

Always have my buzzfrog in my tacklebox. If I can get it moving right in the weeds its gets snagged quickly and aggressively. if not, pack it up and switch to a good buzz bait
