Default Newell Sunday

After the crazy wind the last few days, it was a pleasant surprise to get out on Newell and have a beautiful sunny calm day. Had a fish on before I could even sit down when we set up, dropped the camera down and had 3 pike at the baits! Managed 5 pike for myself and 2 for the lady. A friend showed up, I went to turn the camera to let him have a look, and a pike hit it and almost tore it out of my hand, then we got to watch what a perch sees in his last moments, awesome sight! Again got to see how picky some fish are, toying with the bait til they can get it where there is no hook. The camera was invaluable after I went to a single treble, could watch the fish swim off and wait til it took the hook into its mouth before setting the hook. No huge fish but lots of fun, had one smaller one leap straight out of the hole and almost into my boot. Just camera phone vids.

picky biter

indecisive

Big derby this weekend, Ive been accessing from the NE corner at Redelback bay, it was deep slushy ruts on the weekend, but lots of melting the last couple days, with snow and freezing today so I dont know what it will be like by the weekend. The access at the sailing club was very deep slushy snow on the weekend.

I was there today checking things out and the access at the sailing club was a no go. I am sure if you had a sled or quad you would be fine but with the slushy ruts freezing up and drifting over you were pretty much pooched right at the launch.

Could be a tough weekend for anyone heading to the lake for the derby. Hopefully the wind isn't blowing and drifting up like it was today. Could make for a pretty crappy weekend for everyone. Also watch out for that wind chill out on the lake. It felt fine in brooks but on the lake it seemed to feel alot colder.
