Default Lowrance Fish finder

My question is. What would you reccomend me to upgrade to? I have about 1000.00 budget(give or take). In that budget I want to include side imaging(if possible), nav map for lake of the woods and installation of the unit as well. I have a 17 Sylvan and am using a bare bones lowrance/depth and water temp sonar. I would like to stay with lowrance as well. Also who would you reccomend in Calgary area to do the installation of the unit. Opinions are greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

No matter what finder you buy it will not tell you when to put oil in the motor...

With your budget of about $1000 I would skip the side imaging until you can afford to add it. Just the smallest HDS 5 is going to run at least $700-800 and side imaging $500-650. You can get an HDS 7 for about $1300+ then add the side imaging at a later date. None of the prices include installation.

Humminbird 798s were on sale at wholesale sports awhile back (maybe still are) they were closer to or in your price range and included side imaging.

Hope that helps.

I would say either wait for someone that is upgrading and try to get a HDS 7 or better yet 8 (bottom buttons are very nice to have). But nothing wrong with the HDS 5. Very scalable unit and if you don't want the bigger screen it will do just fine.

If you can get a side finder it is a lot better then just down. The side allows you to see under the bottom, but also i think 100 ft to each side. The problem with down imaging is that it is not digital. So, with the higher end side imaging you will get a much better picture quality. Also, try and get a fish finder that allows networking so you can link your console and bow together in the future.

One nice thing is split screen so you can see more then one screen at a time on the 8 inch models. I like the humminbirds just been around longer and they are a better value for what you get. Also, look state side with the exchange I think cabelas has like a 150 off some of the lowarnce.

For a 17ft boat, you should be able to rely on the HDS-5
I have one of these on a Center Console 21 foot boat and is a great unit. I have a couple of the HDS-10's on the larger boats and are beyong excellent for imagery and function.
