Default Obed Lake

Hi everyone!!! I was wondering if anyone has tried Obed Lake this winter? I was wondering because my folks were out for a drive today and all they saw was 2 sets of quad tracks in the snow on the ice. Is this mainly a lake for when the ice is off, or does anyone ice fish this lake? Have heard/read about this lake with its brown trout and perch, but from what my parents saw today with the lack of tracks on the ice, i am curious. Thanks.

From what ive heard of it, its a slough that will hand you your azz, and on an awfully consistent basis. Id be scared of it too. Im a little slow though, and have contemplated making the run up and running some twitch/jerk baits and crankers while the metabolisms are high in the summer from the little boat. Those big ol browns cant be that tough boys.

It is a TOUGH lake !! Ice fished it twice, never saw a fish (camera) or had a hit. Spent three straight days in the summer there, fished for a combined total of 18 hours, and had two hits, here is the second;

They're in there, but you have to put in HOURS generally to get 'em or know the lake like the back of your hand to pick 'em up consistently.

Ayr.

Loon and others;

How do you find the Brown's fight there? I have only caught a handful, but every one fought like a wet paper bag for me . How have they done or you??

If its on a hot summer day then they will lag and fight like a log. I hit them early morning or later at night and they seem to fight ok.

Default browns

i have caught a lot of obed browns and most of them r good fighters, even the 17-inchers. another thing i like is the big ones jump at obed more often than any other place i have fished them.

That brown is aswome. A trophy lunker no doubt, kudos!
I've been to obed twice, skunked on browns both times. Found some lil perch the one time. It's a tough lake but I like to put in the time for the chance. I've only caught two browns in my life, both on the bow. Maybe that lake is a bit out of league just yet. But both those times i went were before I got into fly fishing. You fellas fish them on the fly? Was that hog brown on the fly Ayr?

Ahh man, sorry Kevin.

I'm tellin' ya man the lake is a KILLER, but if you like self induced punishment, maybe it's for you. Listen, I apologize for gettin' ya all frothed up, here is a smaller one at only 8lbs 6oz, to calm you down a bit , my only other hit of the trip.

It appears like I'm sportin' blue gloves in the pic, but that was the color of my digits after squezzin' the fly-rod for 18 hours to get two hits .

Cheers,

Ayr.

Hey FP,

Yes they were on the fly. You know what they say; once you go black......
Like I mentioned before they both fought like a drift sock, neither of them managed to take out ANY line, but at least they were somewhat photogenic.

Ayr.

Beautiful fish man. Very jealous. You catch them from shore? Any techniques or fly pattern suggestions? You ever try swan by caroline? Most guys get their arses handed to them there also but It might be worth a try for yourself.

I was fishing from a boat, it was wierd, both fish hit pretty well straight out from the boat launch. Luckily my wife was lounging on the shore and I was able to race to shore, have her photograph the fish and release them fairly quickly. I have never tried Swan by Caroline. A couple of buddies of mine used to talk about taking a trip there, but since I took them to Obed and we all got our lunches handed to us they don't talk about Swan or Obed much anymore . When I do fish Swan, I usually end up near Valleyview......

How far out from the boat launch cause it's shallow for what? maybe 400-500 yards if not more before you hit the deep dogleg.
We always had luck in the deep water not the shallows but then we wern't using flies,just hardware..

btw...yeah...this is one tough lake to catch a brown and if you want to score here then you need time and lots of it..I'm not talking hours..I'm talking days..

I agree. I'm up to atleast 30 hours input and zero browns output.
I think I found that dog leg you speak of jester but it I thought it a little closer than that.

you stand at the boat launch, look straight across the lake and there it is (the dog leg). Iv fished that lake allot. I love seeing those browns swim by, until they swim to far and don't even sniff my hook..that is until I put on the "secret"

Well I want one of those secrets!
LOL

If I remember correctly it is relatively easy to see the deep water even from a distance. It's a nice lake IMHO. Camp ground is limited.

What about the creeks on the east side? Anyone ever fish them? Access? I think one goes to summit, anyone fish summit b4?
If I'm not mistaken I thing the BM mag makes reference to beaver damned in browns.
