Great leeches! I, too, was going to start tying my leeches with the pin extension this year in order to get a horizontal presentation. Have you found much difference in success rates using that tying method?
As for my fav still water patterns..I'm a huge lover of chironies, so I tie up countless different patterns of them. I'll get some pics up later on.
I think there is certainly an advantage to presenting them in their natural horizontal orientation. Best way to acheive this is with a non-slip loop knot...and!! the non-slip allows for natural undulating action under the indicator.
As far as being more effective than conventional leeches...I'm not 100% sure yet, but I have (on occasion) outfished partners with the balanced pattern when they were using conventional.
In my opinion, any little thing that gives you an edge is worth it. You spend countless time, effort, and money on gear/gas/boats etc, you might as well put your best fly in front of them in order to make the best of your day on the water!!!

Those are bloodworms! Those catch fish... and a lot of em.
AdamJ .. nice leaches .. i used the second last Micro leach at Maligne last year and did well .. and used a big Purple leach pattern at Pyramid Lake Nevada in 95 and did well for Lohantan Cutthroats(3 to 3 1/2#) in April where the creek runs in.. we do well for Cutthroats here on leaches but i am sworn to secrecy or i will die ;;; so just a pic or 2
