I didn't even know Willem Dafoe was a hunter.
Nice buck.
Congrats.

little bit of an exaggeration in that article when he said the deer stood as tall as an elk. maybe an elk calf.

Nice deer and congratulations on the kill, but reading through the story the dates leave some questions in my own mind?

" in the last five minutes of Alberta’s shooting light on Aug. 31 " (Wednesday)

" on his odometer driving from Alabama to Alberta (say that five times fast) to scout for 12 days, he hadn’t located a mule deer "

" By the end of the week, Cassimus had given up on finding any mule deer, so he went back to that stand for the final night sit "

I get it if he's in a zone that opened August 25 (Thursday) but scouted for 12 days and then shot at the end of the week (Wednesday is considered end of week?)

Could be poor reporting on the dates, but I'm having trouble reconciling the timelines in my own mind.

Just wondering out loud, that's all....

J.

The thing that seemed different for me about this article is it almost seems he was doing this hunt all on his own, there weren’t any outfitter’s mentioned. I was under the impression that Americans had to hire a guide and this fellow seemed to be doing all his scouting, trail cams etc… no one else was mentioned and I have never seen an article where a guide was used where there was no mention at all of him, you’d think they would be all over that seeings as this fellow has shot a very large whitetail and mule over the last couple years.

I actually found the story a little strange also I think his parents live in Alberta but technically he has to be Hunter hosted and be accompanied or be Guided by an Outfitter.?

So I wasn’t the only one…

He mentions a friend

Lots of holes in the story

Seems like outdoor life is desperate for material

20 yard spine shot.

Not where I would probably aim, but good for him. I don't expect to ever have the opportunity so a moot point anyway.

John has hunted legally in Canada for many years with an outfitter. The outfitter doesn't not want his name or location to get out to protect the area he operates in.

His family is not from Alberta, but Alabama.

Very fishy. And you opened the can of worms.

Because "this" is how many illegal kills are discovered?

The hunter has his kill publicized in an international hunting magazine days after the hunt.
Probably put it on Instagram before gutting it.
This hunter is obviously very interested in the promotion of himself and his hunt, zero interest in keeping it quiet.

An anonymous poster declares in their first post on AO that "all was legal".
Are we are just supposed to believe him.
This anonymous poster pretends to be neither the outfitter or the hunter, why the heck did he pop up here to defend the hunt?

Many red flags on this one as have been noted.

If it was a legal hunt, there should be no problem is clearing the air.
Guest1234 could get rid of the smell he created by naming the Outfitter this hunter hired.

I certainly can see where your train of thought is coming from WB, but when there is a decent animal circulating the internet, the public judges from mostly a negative angle. Why can't we all just appreciate the amazing critters we have and leave the investigating to those who get paid for it...

Why should I post the outfitters name? He is my uncle and I have guided for him. This is his livelihood and I don't want to hurt that. He had a pretty tough go of it with COVID and all.

What do you do for a living WB? What is your full name? Will you tell us some of your clients names or a "secret" of how you make your living?

If you really think something is illegal, I will PM you my phone number for you to have F&W call me and I will tell them my uncles name. Deal?

That's exactly where promotion of questionable hunts and hunting stories end up, being investigated by the paid authorities, when they become aware of it.

The Report a poacher program would be pretty useless if all we did was appreciate the pictures or what we witness and not question things that are suspicious.

I don't care if the animal is "decent" or not.

Does that answer your question?

Gunther would never let one of his hunters shoot the biggest buck. Gunther always keeps the biggest bucks for himself to shoot. Sort of looks like a 246 pigeon lake buck.

You have already hurt your Uncle's and your reputation with both of your posts.

There are many illegal outfitters in Alberta, and many aliens that hunt here illegally. Your comments make things seem suspicious.

I had no intention of posting on this thread until you chimed in telling us to believe your anonymous statement.
You opened the can.

The answer to every question you asked about me can be found in this forum.

No need for your number.
There is already enough information on the net.

I'll leave it to you to decide how this thread proceeds from here.

I would like you to explain how I have hurt his or my own reputation? I'm know F&W can look up John's profile and verify exactly what I am saying.

Is it possible that the two of you could take this to PM and work it out, and then get back to us. Or not?

I'd prefer you did that, and this thread stops being derailed. And I would rather not close the thread either.

Personally, I think the “story” behind this deer is a valid part of the discussion
It deserves more attention that someone shooting a “300 lb” deer
It’s obviously from the peace country
And guest1234 definitely has another profile on here that he doesn’t want to use. Or there is no way that he would know about this thread.
As wb mentioned, a lot of poachers are busted because they are in it for the glory and will do whatever it takes to get their pictures in a magazine
