Just a question to anyone.
I’ve always wondered what .410 slugs were mainly used for. Seems small for bear defence, do people use them for deer? Maybe wild boar in the brush?

I think some use it for a [bear] defense round.

I know I had bought some when a .410 was the only shotgun that we owned. They weren't easy to find even back then.

Default .41 slugs

Bass Pro/Cabelas / UFA, I see them quite often. I tried them a few times, dont see much good in them.
Anyone ever figure out a use for them ? Last thing I would shoot a bear with..

I met an “old Newfie” …can we still say Newfie? Anyway, the .410 slug was his go-to for moose. He short a mountain of mooses with that round. Probably wounded a fair number too.

Yes there is a shortage. Haven't seen any since last year, in AB, SK or online.

Use: needing something bigger than bird shot, while hunting birds. I often carry a 410 for long hikes after chickens, in places with plenty of predators. Sure, bear spray is good, but it’s nice to have a slug in your pocket, just in case.

If I am truly concerned about bears I’ll pack a bigger gun, but there’s plenty of other nasty critters a guy can run into that can be solved with a 410 slug.

I picked up a few boxes of slugs and shot too for the little 410, one zone I walk for chickens in October is open for deer so if I come across one 50 yards or less and being a dummy I wouldn’t hesitate to place a slug into the boiler room.

I was surprised that they shot a 3.5 inch group at 50 yards!

Not a lot of stores in the prairie provinces stock 410 slugs, because they aren't legal to use for big game in those provinces.

It seems like most 410's are full choke barrels so not sure you'd want to shoots slugs in them. Or I guess I wouldn't, each to their own.

Foster style slugs out of a 410 are no issue.

This is illegal in Alberta.

To date only chickens.

Guess I will use the slugs on chickens then…..

Default I have some Russian

3" slugs in zinc cases that shoot very accurately at 50 yards....pop cans don't stand a chance. So you can't legally use them on big game use them on pests.Stupid as they will kill deer cleanly under 50 yards and are legal in several States.More powerful than some handgun rounds.

I've been trying to find 410 shells around Calgary for a couple months now with no luck. I asked an employee in Cabelas and said they haven't received any in months.

This thread reminds me of something a trapper told me when asked about .410 slugs he said if you shoot a bear with a .410 double barrel save one barrel for yourself.

I bet if you went to the nations capital you could find 410 slugs following one actor.

No shortage there.
