2013 deer herd ?

With the weather we've had this year, and not an extremely harsh winter last winter, I have noticed both a healthy population of deer with what seems to be healthy head gear being grown in the area I hunt, almost smack dab in the center of the province. I was wondering if you fellas from around the province have noticed the same, or at least similar conditions?

deer numbers in 334 are way down hardly have seen anything.

White tails seem way down, mules same to be doing good in my area 336.

That's funny, it's the exact opposite in 505. 3-4 years ago it would be nothing to go out scouting and find 4 or 5 mulies over 180" in an evening, the last 2 or three years it's been tough to find one over 160, not to mention the numbers have been cut in half.

Northern "bush deer" are way down. Last Winter Edmonton north there really were no Chinooks to knock back the snow pack. 4 foot of snow in a lot of areas. Not a lot of deer in the bush. Exception is where there was a lot of active logging. The machines packed down the snow, there was lots of browse from the tops, and the deer could get around.

Out past Fox Creek mid Sept, and very few tracks in the bush, and for the number of hunters, no deer seen. This was quading a huge area, with recent rain, and looking for tracks.

Rocky area may be a lot better, but still, we are year 1 after two hard years, so don't expect to see a lot of old deer.

I din't know were you were but everywhere I went there was tons of snow,
I had deer starving in my stack yard. tough year in the 200 zones, after the CWD slaughter and a few bad winters.

I stick mostly between ft assinaboine and Boyle, and as far north as calling and slave lake. The snow was deeper than usual last year so I was expecting low numbers this year but what I've seen has been good. I'm guessing that because we never really had a cold streak lasting more than a couple days at a time to go with the snow, maybe they did better then expected?

We put 9 days in Elk hunting this Fall and saw only half a dozen Deer in 234, pretty pathetic.

Not much for headgear on the whiteys here in the south but certainly no shortage of does . Here's hoping that the 675 antlerless tags given out here in 108 will mostly be filled .

Wow, kind of surprised. Honestly thought numbers would have been up from last year and figured it would have been a fairly good antler season accross Alberta.

Haven't been seeing many does or deer at all....certainly not as many as I used to. Couple hard winters in a row really hurts the numbers.

I hear you, about 6 years ago I counted 58 deer in my field at one time, then we had 2 bad winters in a row. Now I'm excited to see 7 or 8, but they have been on the rise for the last three years from where they were.

348 deer number are way down, even from last year. We had so much snow, plus a few late spring dumps. Tough year for deer in this area.

From the responses from my trill cams, the herd is considerably smaller. We'll be down for Thanksgiving long. Turkey dinner at my place. It will be early so we get the evening hunt in.

Why is that? Not the love part, I can understand that, but there are way more deer at my place this year, and you shoulda seen the one we saw at Lawrence's last Sunday on the way back to the cabin after hunting ):-0!!! We ain't that far apart, you gotta stop using bacon grease for bait by your cams!!!

I was out in 328 this past weekend, numbers are down. Not a lot of sign.

when do you see deers the most? mornings or evenings? I saw them mostly in the morning.

Was up in 330 on the weekend of the 21....Had seen some small groups of does...and a lot of quadders hunting right off the quad..

It was kind of hard competing with 7 quads ripping through the area.

I have been targeting elk, being in the woods mostly this year so far. The deer I've seen were either between 7-11am or 4-well after dark. I've come accross lots of sign tho, and I've spotted 2 bucks so far that will gross well over book. The reason I'm so optimistic is because the routes I travel for elk aren't the ones I would normally take for whitetail, and I'm seeing promising sign. Moose rut is coming up soon, I hunt moose and deer in the same area so I'm hoping to come accross o lot more whitetail, hopefully some giants. One particular buck I've seen this year has got to be the largest (body size) I've ever come accross in my life, and by the middle of July had already grown over 140" on his head. I saw tracks that match his size a couple miles from where I spotted him so I hope there are a couple his size roaming around, and that he's not that busy of a deer.

Went for a drive Sunday in340 and not one whitey from what I have seen the # are way down this year! Was north a few weeks ago and not much from what I saw! Hope rocky is better got a hunt planed!

I have a spot I've been going to in 152 for over 10 years. I manage to get out up to 8 times/season for both deer and birds. Where I would have counted 30 per day 5 years ago I am now lucky to see one. That's with walking 10 to 15 kms a day. Terrible shame but I'm going to be looking for new hunting grounds. I'm not going to feed my family going there any more.

The deer herds in southern Alberta/the 100 zones, are finally beginning to recover but now they are going to be slaughtered again due to far too many tags being given before they are allowed to get reestablished. Welcome to the shyte show called Alberta Hunting.

I am seeing way more does and fawns this year than last year. I have only seen a couple little bucks though. Tough winters are really hard on the bucks that are run down after the rut.
