Default 2013 Bull Moose Down !!! :)

Well despite the late fall, skiff if snow and relatively warm weather, we decided to give Moose Hunting a go, since the season ends Nov. 30 for us. With one failed trip to the WMU of choice (about 1 hr from home), we set out early this AM with little faith.

My fiance has the only Moose tag of 6 of us, which is unsual but regardless made filling the tag that much more crucial, so he, his father and myself embarked on our journey shortly after 7AM.

We arrived to the legal area, and began scowering along the main (old) logging road for any sort of sign of recent movement. Due to the snow that had just passed through, it was a little difficult to be sure, but regardless we did see a fair amount of Deer and Rabbit tracks.

As we continued onward, all of a sudden there was an explosion of Moose tracks - fresh moose tracks, on either side of the road. Glancing out into a marshy slew which was, luckily, frozen over, we spotted a Cow Moose with a big lump of snow on her head. As not to spook her, we continued driving and discussed it was strange for her to be by herself, especially with that much sign.. the opportunity arose to turn around, and we took it.

Turning around, we decided to do another drive-by and take a closer look at the surrounding area, and hopefully spot a nice meat bull for hubby to tag. We slowed down, and just as I said "let's double check that is a Cow", it turned it's head and presented two nice paddles. We laughed at our mistake, until we were forced to pick our jaw up off the floor, when we realized this now 'he-she' had turned it's head to look at it's buddy, a bigger bull Moose standing 20 feet to his right. We quickly got organized and he asked me which Bull he should take.. I said "Take which ever one you feel will be a better shot from where we are". We praised the good Lord for aligning our stars today, turned around and hubby hopped out and tagged the one and only Moose our family will see for the 2013 season with a single lung shot at 150YRDS with his Swiss K31 (Open Sights). He ended up choosing the larger of the two, as it presented itself best.

We gutted and tagged him, camo'd him with some small spruce trees, and headed home for the quad and horse trailer.. We all had a hunch my mother-in-law wouldn't appreciate a 1200lb bull moose in the back of her Tahoe.. and at that, between the quad and the Moose, we had to bend him into some pretty unnatural positions to fit him into the 16ft trailer.

Keep in mind, we are meat hunters, so to harvest a bull of his magnitude is a gift. His body was in excellent condition, and the pictures surely don't do justice for body size.. he's a BIG boy! I realize he may not be that big to the average person, but we normally aim for a 2-3 YR Bull

Enjoy the photos. I'm going to measure him tomorrow - any guesses?

Its 7.5x55.. it's really neat actually, under the buttplate is the name of the swiss soldier who carried it.. it's a little heavy for my liking, being a woman with shorter arms and such, but even for the size it hardly kicks at all. When he ordered it, his dad said "What the heck are you shooting, Elephants?!", but after he tried it out and hubby's harvested a Mule Buck + this Moose (with one well placed shot), he's thoroughly impressed. Ammo's kinda hard to come by and hubby as learning about reloading - he was told it takes the same powder charge as a 30-06 but I can't back that up for sure.. I know next to nothing about reloading!

Thanks for all the support - anxious to see what he measures today!

Anyone have experience with the "Big Hooker" from Cabelas for mounting Moose (european)?

No, it's a Swiss K31 (7.5 x 55 cartridge)
Note.. I wasn't lucky enough to get drawn for a Moose tag - the photo is of my Fiance. It's his Moose

It was taken at 150YR Open Sights but he did mount a cheap scope on it just yesterday, for some longer shots, which will likely be required for Elk hunting in January.
