Anyone want to shoot coyotes?

We are in Sturgeon County near St. Albert and a coyote just about got one of my dogs last night. There are so many around our place and my 80 year old mother is afraid to even go outside at night. We see coyotes all the time and definitely hear them every night. They even have their pups on our property close to our houses. We would love to have someone come out and lower the numbers.

Sorry to hear about your dog, although it's good to hear they didn't kill him or her. If I were closer I'd be glad to help but you shouldn't have a Problem finding someone who is closer and will thin out the pack for you.

Gee, in the spring you should post an ad seeing if anyone would be kind enough to help you take care of some pesky gophers...I'm sure you'll have to install traffic lights at your place to handle all the guys willing to help you out with the coyotes. This is every varmint hunters dream post!

Thank you everyone for your replies. Jamie - you were right - lots of pm's. Brother1 - we don't have gophers or too many varmints because I have Jack Russells. We had a German Shepherd but he got hit by a truck while chasing a fox just before Christmas. (Fox hunting is allowed too.) Thank you everyone for your concern for my dog. She is very feisty and I think the coyote had a hard time hanging on to her and of course as soon as he let go of her, she immediately wanted to have a go at him... I'm going to have a look at all the replies that I got and talk it over with my husband and we will be in touch with some of you. I think that the coyotes in this area are quite "educated" so we want to make sure that whoever comes out is experienced. Thanks again for all the offers to help and I will try to reply to all the pm's individually.

On another note - after my dog had the run-in with the coyote, I went out onto our driveway and growled into the night. (This probably sounds weird, but when I see them around, I growl and they take off. It's kind of my way of standing up to them.) Anyway, after I growled, there was this loud solitary eerie howl from the woods, and then that was followed by the usual coyote noises from other directions. You people know about all the different calls they do and I'm wondering if you could tell me how to interpret what I was hearing.

Most of the time at night when you hear them making noise it is to see were there friends are, kinda like a locator.When the growling starts it is because one is more the leader than the rest and he wan't everone to know.As in wolf packs coyotes to have an alfa male and he is in charge.When you hear the barking non stop, that is usually a threat bark and if hunting them good luck, basically they are saying danger,danger stay away.If you have dogs around they will also try and suck them away from the house by making allot of noise.So if the dogs are out side and you hear allot of coyotes bring them in.

When my dogs were pups you could hear the yotes making a wimpering sound about 60 yrds from my cabin at night. Once I called my pups back in the area exploded with yelps and howls. Almost like they were trying to lure the inexperienced dogs in for a meal. Those wiley coyotes.

Supposedly a pack of coyotes will use a bitch in heat to lure domestics out into a field and the woods and then attack them.....not sure if this is an old wives tale or not but my dad told me that so it has to be true

Your Dad was a smart dude......that's why I tie em' up. I have a female and I tie her up just in case she's bisexual.

A dog that will not leave camp is a good dog....and extemely rare.
