They were finding some up north a week or so ago, but it has been too dry down south. I am hoping this rain fixes that.

Good luck.

I was finding golden morels two days ago that were already drying up. Picked lots of verpa(spring morels) two days ago. I wouldn't wait another week or they might be finished. Someone mentioned that once the temperature hits 24 C the morels are done.

I was picking 30 minutes form Edmonton.

That was me Red, too many warm days over 24 or too many warm nights over 8-10 stops the morels from producing fruit.

I found two the other day.

I have never found more then a few in any given year. But at least I did find some this year. Most years I don't find any.

I think we are at the northern limits of their range.

My relatives east of Edmonton have been picking them all week and the general consenses is that the season is pretty well over. However the cooler temp. today (saturday) and some rainfall could see them popping up again for another week. Fingers crossed.

Up north you need to look in the burns from the last couple years.

I picked a ice cream pail of morels two days ago. Went back today and I am happy I did.
Only picked a small portion of the property. Covered about 20 acres. I will be picking for the next few days. 300 acres to go. 40 minutes from Edmonton.

2 hours worth of picking in the pictures. About 11 lbs. fresh.

Why do you cut them in half is this for drying purposes?

I split them lengthwise to help with drying and also to check for worms. Out of 25 pounds I found 1/2 lb. with worms.

I do throw them out. The ones with worms tend to fall apart. I think the worms change the integrity of the mushroom wall. The worms tend to go between the layers and chew the cambium destroying the strength of the morel.

I guess I should be more resourceful and eat the wormy ones for the fat and protein content of the worms.
