Default Fiddleheads

I find lots of fiddleheads and a few morels both along the road to cabins at long lake 10 miles south of Boyle. But not for another few weeks maybe a month.

Checked one of my areas today and found one little one. The moisture we got last weekend is drying up fairly quick, might be another tough year for shroomers if we don't get some rain.

I'm from Grande Cache. It's dropped below freezing every night for the past week but I still managed to find 1 about ther size of the tip of my thumb. Usually the last week of may is the best time around here to find morels.

AAhhh, ok. I pick up near Smoky lake. Have not heard about any being found there yet. But the heat is coming out so hopefully by may long they will start popping out.

Last year was real dry and I only found a dozen or so, all around a dried slew. Not many but they were big.
I am just hoping to get about the same this year....hoping

30 minutes west of Sundre and didn't find anything on Saturday. Temperature was approx 22 degrees C. Would concur we need some rain... like this evening here in Calgary.

Going to try again on Sunday.

Any time now! These showers sure will help. Remember, morel season is short, 2-3 weeks and it's over for an area. Calgary area usually peaks June 5-10 (the same time the fawns are being born), July 1 in the Mountains.

I've picked a couple dozen in the last week, they should come good next week, hoping for a couple good rains, that'll get them popping out.

Had a good feed of them tonight with some moose chops, mmm mmm!

Picked a handful today, still not many out there. Also tried out my new (to me, slightly used) Cabela's Alaskan Meindl's and loved them.

You bet! I love fiddleheads!
I checked the patch yesterday and they weren't up yet but should be pretty quick.

Here's some of last years batch.

I found a dozen or so morels on Saturday while planting a few trees on our property.

Thank you oyster! The dates on last years posts put things into perspective for me. This'll be the last weekend for sledding for me so here's something else that I can look forward to.

For the fella that asked me last year where I find my fiddleheads, I get them in an area where there are allot of mature poplar (low, indirect light) and low land that's pretty moist, almost swampy. If you don't find them this year, keep an eye out during the summer for spots with the long fan like fern leaves during the summer. The fiddleheads will be there next spring and if you find one clump of them you'll find allot more in the same area.

I usually pick all of ours on the May long weekend. I might get 20 lbs of so in a couple of hours. My little dog seems to know what we are looking for and he's alloy of help finding them..........when he doesn't eat them before we pick them. Maybe I'll go high tech this year and take a picture of the area.

Another couple of months around here I'm afraid.

I found some mushrooms on Tuesday. They were in a bag in the frozen food section at costco.

Sooooo, does anyone have any tips for morel hunters in the south country? I have picked them all over BC, but from some of last years posts it would appear that some are finding them in the river valleys around here.

Shamelessly asking for tips - not favourite spots or UTMs, just advice.

Well only a few more weeks and the hunt begins. Temperature is averaging 13 degrees C during the day and 3-4 degrees C during the nights. If i recall correctly the key ingredients for morels is 5 days of 20 degrees C during the day and 5 degrees C at night. Trees also look to be slowly budding. Spring is almost here.

Default Morels

Wife and I were out walking in Mill Creek Ravine in Southeast Edmonton on Sunday and found 2. A couple more warm days and they should start to pop.

I've picked mushrooms in the Sundre area in the fall but would like to try for some morels in the spring near Calgary for something new. Can anyone give me some general locations to try around here? I was thinking of checking out Ghost Rec area but I honestly have no idea even what general area to start. All I've managed to gather so far is to look for more grassy areas with popular trees.

If no one wants to share the info publicly, a PM would be most appreciated.

This week looks good for temperature.

Look around areas with water, poplar trees, trees with greenery just starting, east side of hills (that's where i found my first morels).

Im a novice but there are some in this forum with a lot more grey hair when it comes to finding these gems.

Im heading out on Saturday to Sundre to look.
