Thankfully, no one on here has any power to do anything. And I will leave it at that!

Stand Down
Stand down soldier
Your mission is done
The danger is over
There's no need to run
You were trained well
To obey each demand
So take this and heed
This one final command
Rest your body
And rest your eyes
As we weep the loss
When a good soldier dies
Bask in the peace
That you can now enjoy
Embrace it for us
Let it too be our joy
The life that you lived
Will constantly remind
And bring on a smile
To those you leave behind
We thank you for serving
Your loyalty stood true
And hope that some day
We will meet up with you.
Perseverance

Just got called at home. All CAF personnel are hereby ordered to NOT wear their uniform to and from work or run errands/coffee run during the day in uniform.
Canada wide order. Doesn't affect me, I go to the gym in PT gear every morning before I go to work and go home in civvies.
This is now a force protection issue.

It's a shame that in our national rush to avoid "doing nothing" we also avoided responding sensibly.
When ISIS finally does figure out a way to "respond" to us, let us not delude ourselves as to who threw the first punch.

Your opinions are indeed troubling and in fact part of the problems our society face. Your attitude contributes to the complacency that has resulted in horrible tragedies such as what has taken place today IMO.

He added that Canada is an anti-islamic proxy state under the US and thus is a legitimate target for it’s contribution to the war against the Islamic State.
The official not saying how many attackers were involved in the attack told Newsday 24/7 the jihadist opened fire at two police guards who tried to stop them outside the parliament building.
He said one was killed and another critically injured. jihadist were successfull in making it to inside the parliament hall where MPs and PM Stephen Harper were at the time.
“Jihadist shoot the infidels and destroyed everything inside the parliament hall,” says the official who don’t want to be named."

Uh, NO.
This is now a force protection issue. As an Infanteer I would have no issue carrying a weapon 24/7 as they are simply an extension of my hands. Same goes for all combat arms soldiers. It is an entirely different story for service and support trades in all 3 branches of the military, many of whom probably haven't manipulated a weapons system in years. Just because someone is in uniform does not a gunfighter make. Cooks, clerks, refrigeration techs, dentists, etc etc. likely haven't fired a pistol or service rifle since they qualified prior to deploying or an annual weapons refresher. It's not in their job description. Yes, everyone is a soldier first, but "soldier" is a generic term. Case in point, I ran a range last week and a Navy LS clerk did not know how load , ready, unload or to clear stoppages on the 9mm. She had never fired one before. And you want her carrying a handgun into Tim Horton's?

it just doesn't seem right that in times of crisis and threat the military presence seemingly disappears from our streets. However, that's easy for me to say given I don't wear a uniform. Easy for someone who is safe to demand that others take more risk. Will be interesting to see what actual soldiers think. Maybe they are good with it.

It doesnt matter what they think. It is an order and must be followed. But I agree with you they are likely not happy about it either.

Again, this is a force protection issue. Nothing more. FYI, the US military are NOT permitted to wear cammies off post on most bases- for this exact reason.
I have no issue getting shot at and playing IED hopscotch in places like Afghanistan, been there several times and done that. I'm really not interested though in getting greased going to get a coffee at lunch with nothing more than my truck keys in my hand!
Again, it's a force protection issue-nothing more. Unarmed people in uniform are now targets. If they want to let me take my C8 and 9milli home, no problem. Otherwise I'll leave the CADPAT in my locker.

Airborne, do many soldiers even train with handguns? I was under the impression that only officers, MP's, and probably some vehicle crew members carried sidearms.

Pistols are essentially "camp guns" I never carried mine on patrol in Afghanistan and only carried it back in the FOB as it was easier than carrying around my rifle/M203 while inside the wire and going for chow etc. Everyone in the combat arms, particularly Infantry are proficient with them and we shoot all the time but generally only C6 machine gunners carry them as a secondary weapon. Some guys carried them but not all. You have to qualify on the PWT prior to deploying.

unconfirmed
Law enforcement and U.S. government sources tell CBS News the dead shooting suspect is Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, born 1982, and he is believed to be Canadian-born.
Ottawa police spokesman Chuck Benoit said two or three gunmen may have been involved in the attack. Gilles Michaud, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, called it a "dynamic, unfolding situation."

a sad..sad day
First....condolences to the family of this young military person who lost his life and went to work this morning and not knowing it would be his last. So tragic! It was a matter of time before the clutches of evil show themselves. Canada was warned two weeks ago to be prepared for attacks. I don't think we will ever be able to protect ourselves from these face-covered cowards but given the chance...I know a lot of us members would love the chance to blow them away. The sad thing too is this attacker could very well be a canadian turned terrorist! Just my opinion!!!!

According to Reece's post above, it was a Canadian turned terrorist. Unconfirmed at the time however.
