Default Fiskas Wolfram Jigs 5mm or 6mm

These are popular jigs so someones gotta know, I'm adding to my perch arsenal for this year- not interested in little guys so would I be cool getting 6mm? Or is it getting to be a little too big? Would the 6mm be better for brookies and rainbows?

Smaller and you'll typically catch fish, bigger and you'll weed out smaller fish. This is my experience!

Default Fiskas hooks

Been ice fishing with mostly 5mm Fiskas hooks for years. I'll use 6mm for deeper waters (>18 feet).

Those hooks are significantly cheaper if you order them directly from the manufacturer's web site. Probably save like $2 each.

Cheers

80% of a Perch’s diet consists of insects, invertebrates, scuds, snails, nymphs, bloodworms etc. Majority of the time they want a snack not a meal so smaller can definitely be better, however, having said that I have caught Jumbos on 3”+ Parker’s minnows on a spoon fishing for Walleye as well as other larger offerings so moral of the story is to throw everything you can at them until you can determine what the go to presentation is for the day. I usually start with a relatively large presentation at first to discourage the little guys, all the while studying reactions, and then downsize as necessary from there. Jumbos are cannibals as well eating young Perch under 4” so when in the mood larger presentations can work better than smaller ones however this only happens like 20% of the time or less. The key is to attract and trigger. I always have a large presentation to call them in from a distance and then will deploy a smaller option to get bit if they didn’t take the larger offering right off the bat. Good luck!

Like PerchBuster eluded to, I think it depends on their mood, etc...One of the biggest perch I ever caught was on a 3/8 oz jig n minnow going for walleye. Also caught back to back multiple jumbos within a few mins on a large size genz worm, which is round 25 mm tip to tip. That said, overall I have landed more on smaller lures.
