Looking to see if there any rod building courses offered in the area??

Fish tales has a rod building program, you choose your own mmaterials. Wayne is a great guy to deal with.

Geoff is a very accomplished rod builder and would be great to learn from. Or teach yourself lots of info online and supplies are fairly cheap if you look around.
