Default Spearfishing lake/river south alberta

I have been spearing a few rivers with some luck just outside of Calgary (suckers) getting tired of shooting those buggers and want to go for Perch, I was wondering if people still spear in Alberta and Sask. since the only threads i have read have been years old.

To get down to it, I am looking for good Perch lakes and also good close-ish Sask lakes to spear that are clear enough and small enough there are fish to be found easily.

Also looking for a group of people or someone to go out with that shares this passion. I normally spear in Morocco but when not on vaca I like it here. Travel not an issue within BC and SASK.

Also if you know of slower pieces of river around Calgary shoot me a line as well.

Thank you.

Cody

You need to read the regulations

Spearfishing / Bowfishing

A special licence for spearfishing or bowfishing is not required. Spearfishing and bowfishing is allowed under the Alberta Sportfishing Licence.
Only spears propelled by spring, elastic, compressed gas or muscular power are permitted.
Only persons who are swimming may spearfish.
Spears or bows cannot be used to take trout, mountain whitefish, Arctic grayling, lake sturgeon, walleye or northern pike.
Spearfishing or bowfishing are not permitted in Gods, May, Seibert, Winefred, Andrew, Gardiner and Namur lakes.

Not only can you spear or bow fish certain game fish..one can also get a Salvage permits for canals when drained and all species are game.

If the water isn't deep enough to swim but you lay down and float does that count as swimming?

Lol, yes I am aware of the regulations. I am planning a trip to lake diefenbaker as well before summer ends. Perch suckers and if I remember lake whites but not sure on those. Sask is amazing tho and everything's up for grabs. Last trip was a bad lake and I still got 3 jack

Quick! Back on topic summers about to end

I read a few unofficial websites saying that as well but wardens and regs say that lake whitefish, perch, and suckers ( if your into them) are open season for anyone regardless of race. Only other restriction I found was 100m from any public beach and I'm guessing boat launches as well but who would shoot there anyways.

Lake whites are ifyy since the regs state mountain whites and technically lake whites are not considered them? Don't quote me on that tho. Also trying to find a good lake with whites would seem the bigger issue.

Looked at pierce lake, looks great. Hear about lake Diefenbaker a while ago and its closer.. might hit it up this weekend and Pierce later. Thanks for the help!

On a side note. Anyone from calgary/EDM that would like to try spearfishing? I am no pro by any means and only going to be in 6-15 foot waters. Only need a wetsuit 5mm would be best for you. and I have a pole if you do not have a gun of your own. The company would be appreciated.

I also have a blow up raft to take with if needed.

That is actually a really cool video. I had no idea people could actually go spearfishing around Calgary.

Default Perch

Did a little diving at Grassy Lake (Sherburne lake reservoir). The water was quite clear at the time and there were good numbers of Perch. Some were pretty small so might be a good challenge. Still lots of good eater size though.

Be careful with some of the recommendations you are getting regarding Saskatchewan lakes. The visibility in many lakes gets worse throughout the summer because of algae growth. I have been spear fishing in Saskatchewan for 35 years. I am familiar with almost all the lakes in north west Saskatchewan. If you are thinking of heading out to a certain lake, PM me and I will let you know what I think. I may be able to save you a long trip. Best time for most lakes is June.

My thoughts exactly, what do you do with all these dead suckers? This isn't fishing they should call it killing or hunting.

I've always wanted to try spearfishing. Not suprised by the amount of negative posts on this thread, a lot of losers on here that can't catch fish...

Ricky: Fishing is catching fish, whether it be by hand, rod and reel, netting or spearing. I understand a lot of anglers do not like spear fishermen. I do a lot of spearfishing and some time take grief at the boat launch or filleting shack. My standard response is, any old lady can drag a hook through the water.

Ricky: You will be pleased to know that I only take what I can eat on the fishing trip. Usually no more than 2 jacks. I am sure you will also like to know that I will not shoot a jack over five pounds. This year I passed on at least a dozen jacks over 15 pounds. The biggest I ever shot was 28 pounds and the only reason I did it was to put him on the wall. Anglers are not the only conservationists out there. This year I mounted a go pro camera on my spear gun. I have some great footage of chasing good sized jacks through the weeds. I could have shot everyone of them but did not. I assure you that not " Everything must die". For me there is not greater thrill in the outdoors than observing perch, pickerel, jacks, trout, whitefish and suckers in there natural habitat. I have speared all of those fish but, a hell of a lot less than I could have.
