Shop around? Insurance is expensive for new drivers, and with reason I guess. I feel for youngsters now in regards to insurance. Maybe get him on as occasional driver if he is at home, just be aware of the rules surrounding this, if you fib your insurance could be voided.

Pretty standard nowadays unfortunately. Until he is 25 he is going to be paying through the arse. If he gets even one speeding ticket while he is a new driver, it can have a huge effect too. I had a kid working for me that was under 20 and had his license suspended for too many points and when he got it back and was insuring a total junker old Nissan pick up he was paying something like $600/month! I told him he could take a heck of a lot of ubers for that...

Not surprising, hasn’t really increased much in 25 years since I got my license. No choice but to pay it and encourage him to be responsible for years so it will come down

Don't feel bad, in 1991 i was paying almost exactly
$1600 a year on a 1980 $1300 truck.
Scream it nto your son's head not to speed, i got 5 tickets (to many demerits) & was stuck with higher insurance rates until around 1999.

Yup I remember those days, back in 1975 I had a couple to many speeding tickets and got a 30 day suspension............ wow was paying $275 a month for insurance PLPD, but it cured me, I slowed down and only have 3 photo radar tickets in the last 40 years.

I paid through the nose again in the early 90's when I had 2 teenagers driving my vehicles, thankfully they made it through without any major bang ups and now I listen to my kids complain as I have 3 grandchildren driving.

Sounds about right. My son started driving in 1999, and PL/PD cost him $2200/year back then on an old S-10 pickup that was worth less than that.

Yup just had a buddy who’s son turned 16. Quoted 6500 full coverage on truck that cost him 6500. 3300 for comp I believe and 2700 for plpd. Believe I paid 1700 for plpd in 99 when I bought my first vehicle

The bad part is that if the teen is living at home, the insurance company will consider that they drive all vehicles listed at the address. My 17 year old daughter only drives the 99 Dodge 1500, but my wifes 17 Acura RDX insurance has tripled since she is licensed. I took the liability insurance off my 2003 Mercedes sedan as we aren't driving much with lockdown and it saved me 160 per month.

All of you do realize you are not insuring the value of your vehicle but everyone elses vehicle right?

His $2700 s#%t box runs in to an $80 000 2020 F150 Limited it gets real expensive real fast.

Insured my 16yrd old daughter on a 2006 Kia and insurance went from $500 a year to $2400

If he has not yet taken a Driver Ed. course, he should, as this will reduce his rate a little.

Default insurance costs for new drivers

Just a bit to add here that might be helpful. The third kid just got a car and we shopped around for insurance. No driving record, obviously.
Aviva did not want to offer her a quote.
Wawanesa quoted $3000 per year for basic $1Mil liability but wouldn't allow her to make payments - all up front and also required a safety inspection (which would have resulted in a new windshield and who knows what else), let alone the cost of the inspection.
AMA quoted $3000, would take monthly payment directly from the kid via auto payments from her bank account and no inspection needed (2005 vehicle). Now the kid builds a credit rating while paying monthly and needs to figure out how to how to earn or beg, borrow and steal and save $300 per month or else.
Oh and driver training class saved her 10% (per year I think) but cost around $900 for the course.
kidd.

Guys seem to be missing a bit of the point here. The value of the insured vehicle has almost no bearing on the insurance premium. A $1000 vehicle can cause $1m in damage, and that is what your insurance is covering against
