Default Finally landed a sturgeon!

Thanks to the guys on the forum that gave me tips and advice to help land this guy! He gave me a pretty good fight, weighed in at 22 pounds and was 4 feet long.

Awesome catch, welcome to the addiction! Thats one you will never forget, I also like how you are holding it in the pic (horizontally supporting the fish's weight). When it comes to weighing fish, Sturgeon specifically, they should never be weighed vertically by the gills. The gill plate can be easily torn and being suspended vertically is hard on the cartilage, this can be fatal if they decide to thrash around. Sorry I dont like to preach or be preached to but I feel it necessary to spread the knowedge about these magnificant creatures. I have attached a link below to a weight chart that can be used to very accurately obtain your fish weight. I hope you dont take this the wrong way, and I wish you good luck in your future Sturgeon excursions! Tight Lines!

:note
I use a fabric tape for measurement and measure the fish in the water, usually in my cradle net if they fit.

For fish you want to weigh, but not keep, put them in the net ( or cradle better yet) and suspend your net or cradle by the hook on your scale and take down the reading.

Deduct the weight of the empty net or cradle ...... no harm to the fish, and accurate.

Buety Sturgeon BTW.

Default The polite way

Good on you AppleJax. That was really a polite way to help someone out. This is how the forum should be ! More helping , less flaming. Also good idea EZM on using net to obtain a weight.

Congtrats on the great fish, its nice to see people give others advise in a pleasant and helpful type way instead of jumping down ones throat. And yes keep them pics coming!
