I hafta use a cane because of recent hip surgery, and because of my age, I go to the self-checkout and play the ancient decrepid old fool who doesn't know his arse from a keyboard, and always ask someone "How do ya do this?"
The young women there are always happy to oblige for some reason (I guess I look "fatherly" or "non-threatening" or something) and they end up doing it for me- which is what I wanted in the first place.
It sure beats standing in a long line with only a few items like you said!
