Default Slowing a dog down when eating?

How can I slow my lab down when eating? I already have a dish that has a cross in it but he still inhales his food and then throws it up and eats it again. Any tips appreciated. Thanks

You can get some balls to put in with food so he has to work around them. Or you can buy real big kibblet food.

I've always bought those "kong" mini tires to place in the food dish. Works like a charm!

Smile Does he work hard in the cold?

If so, feed him smaller amounts more often, make sure he is getting enough.

just a couple questions

is his food dish on the ground?
if its on the ground, they can suck air when eating, and it can cause "blout"
if its the right hight, there head shouldnt be any lower then there back.
i got a big dog, so i use a coffee table, for a feeding station

it might help,

if not, give smaller helpings more offen

is there other dogs around?

how many times do you feed a day?

Put a fist sized round rock in the dog bowl that way the dog has to eat around the rock. Had the same problem with one of my labs.

We have two labs. The female inhales her food and the male eats each kibble one by one. We got one of those special bowls that are all lumpy on the inside. Slows her down, but I had the bowl upside down one day and got to wondering. Hmmm.
Now the male actually finishes before her when I do the upside down thing.

One of my dogs did this. Bought a "gulp bowl" for her and it works. The bowl basically had three peg looking things that stick up from the inside.

I have owned a lab for 14 years. There is no slowing them down....they are chow hounds and that's it.

I control the food....

I place the food in front of my dogs they have to wait until I tell them it is ok to eat....I can also tell them to leave it and they wait until they get the ok to continue....

My bullmastiff/ rottie can be a quick eater sometimes...

By controlling her in this manner it forces her to slow down as she does not know what command is coming or if there is a command coming

Lone Wolf has the answer. You can buy food dishes that have a series of vertical projections that prevent the dog from eating too much too fast, because they have to eat around the projections. Worked for mine!

There's been times when I fed duke and went about my business and he sits there drooling for over an hour until I come back and say 'ok'. I feel bad for torturing the poor guy. (Forgot to say ok or used the wrong voice inflection)

Duke still eats slow but I do find he eats quicker when another dog is in the house. We started the food training from a pup so maybe that has something to do with it.

My dog eats like a shopvac. I at least make him sit until I finish pouring the kibble into the bowl. We tried feeding him one kibble at a time (trainer's suggestion) but it took a lot of time and we gave up. He is a rescue that was near starvation...he can't help but be excited to get fed.

my gsp ate like that when i first got him, i figured he was really hungry so i fed him a little more 2 times a day instead of feeding just once, now he eats slow and usually leaves food in his dish .

Filling the bowl with water might work. Kibble soup as it were.

If you don't mind the noise, a Kong Wobbler works great for this purpose.

I wonder how a dog figures it out. I can give him a treat and it's gone before it hits the bowl but give him something he does not like like a slice of tomato and it hits the floor and is never touched.

Had the same problem years ago, vet said put it on the floor and spread it out. Eventually she stopped eating so fast.
Took about a week
Hope this helps

Some dogs rush through the food to be ready to get more. Just hoping to find more. We use a small bowl with the projections. Any brand works. Definitely consider giving 3 medium meals a day.
Another option is to spend stop feeding from a bowl all together. If you are around it all day, feed from the pocket. Best training method there is. Constant rewarding for correct behavior..You will find out how hard the dog will work at being good. Best of luck.

Thanks for the tips.
He eats kibble that is about 5/16"-3/8" in size. He never did it as a puppy, he is almost 2 yr. I have an older lab 8 and she eats slow as can be. We also have a pup that is 1yr and she eats fast with a bowl that has the cross like pieces the protrude from the edges but she at least chews her food. I feed them about 10' apart so it is not a competition. They won't go to the other bowls. They get food in the morning and at night. We also stand there to wait for them to finish or they just dump the bowls over right of the bat. Thanks again for the help.

Default Labs eh ?

My rescue Lab eats like there was no tomorrow too ...

I add a cup of warm water to the bowl and a cup of Beneful salmon twice a day.

In the morning I add a tablespoon of yogurt, he stopped puking up his food.

Other then that, a few dog biscuits in KONG when I leave, and on my return he gives me KONG and he gets another biscuit. This stopped him from trashing the house when I was away. With the KONG trick, he knows I'm coming back.

He does not eat until I tell him its OK, and will leave the bowl on command.
