I agree that deer is in the mid 160's, who ever said 145 is out to lunch. Now I 'm doing a gross not net. In my opinion gross score is all that maters.

Sort of a problem in that area is that it is almost as hard to find a doe as it is to find a buck, lol. I will give it my best though and see what happens.

It's going to be pretty cold tomorrow too and there is about a foot of snow on the ground. On Thursday they are forecasting a chance of rain though! So tomorrow might very well be the last chance I get at him this season.

I am thinking to start with a young buck grunt and rattle a little later. If that does not produce, move a little and stick to doe bleats. Any thoughts on this plan? The area is pretty much bush with some odd openings like the one where his pics were taken.

Find the freshest concentration of doe tracks you can in the core area.

After the morning action, go for a walk and find out where the deer are Right Now. If your buck is on a doe, he is not going to leave her. She will likely bed up.
Waiting in an area the deer are not using won't do much. If the trail cam location is not showing new sign, keep looking.

When you have found the fresh sign, Sit on smaller openings, animal trails in the trees near the bedding areas.
Even in the rut the does are careful of the larger openings during the day.

Try calling and rattling, mix it up, you never know....

I do a lot of running and gunning type calling sessions at this time of year.
!/2 hour at a spot, tops. Move two-three hundred yards and try again. Most action happens within two-five minutes. Bucks with a doe are not going anywhere, you need to get in their space. Bucks without does are going to be hovering near the dominant buck with a doe, or traveling quickly in search of another one. No point spending time where the deer aren't.

Went out today for even longer than I was planning on (6 hours instead of 3-4) and nada. Found an elk (very decent bull, all by his only self, which I thought was weird), a couple of mule bucks and a couple of does, but not a single whitetail. Will try again on Friday (if I can make it).

I will be giving it another try tomorrow. Just confirmed that my cousin will be coming with me. We will be going in the early afternoon and until I put my tag on this guy or lights out, which ever comes first, lol. Does anyone have an advice on how to take advantage of the help in my situation?

Yeah I figure mid 160's, but with that width he could be in the 170's. Not sure who could see 140 on that deer.

160+ and definitely over 5 yrs old. They get that Roman nose at 5. And the grey on his face is a big indicator. This might be his prime year and will put mass on from here on but doubtful his tines will get any taller. Plus he may not survive the winter as it’s threatened to be a bad one. Good luck.

To add a little more to the story, this buck's brother was shot at noon last year on November 12th on the very clearing in the bush where these photos were taken. He measured just over 170 gross. The rack is pretty much identical in shape to what this guy is caring, including the split on the same side. One thing that is different is that the brother had about 2.5-inch drop on the opposite side from the split.

The deer that was shot last year, had less mass, shorter tines and his spread was significantly less.

Edit: It was concluded that that was his brother due to the shape of the racks, that are almost identical, quite literally.

Still roaming free in Alberta woods. I get another crack at him for another 3-4 hours in the afternoon and that is about it.

I created a thread where I asked other members for advice and sort of described some of the hunt as well. I haven't yet updated to add yesterday's outing.

^ I sure hope you are right; though I think he is older than that. He was smarter and luckier than me this year and gets to walk the woods at least another 9 months. Unless the winter will take him, since it looks like it is going to be a tough one. It's only November and there is already at least a foot and a half of snow in the bush with a pretty thick crust in the middle. Hope we will get to play this game again next year and get to measure him up to find out the who the winner is

Anyone thinks he is less than 160 needs to shake their head! Easy 160 buck there. Young deer but great potential the next 2-3 years to be an outstanding deer
