Athabasca River in Jasper?
Does anyone know how clear the Athabasca river is in Jasper park? Is it quite dirty or is it clear? When does it clear up, I haven't been there at this time of year. And yes, for people who don't know, it is open at this time of year.
Thanks

angleritis. I like that!!
Since no one else has spoken up yet.
I don't know what it is like in Jasper, but where the Athabasca runs through White court it is relatively clear. Maybe clear isn't the right word, a bit murky for that.
From that I would expect that anywhere in Jasper it ought to be clear.
I'm sure someone has been through Jasper lately and can give a better report then this, but this should give you at least some idea.

Thanks very much KegRiver,
Yeah I'm gonna be heading out there in two weeks for a day, I'm sure it will be clear enough!
But anyone who has recent updates or pics, feel free to post!

Just so you know...the dioxins from the pulp mills have accumulated in the fish and the fish migrate into the park. Therefore...I would not eat any. Don't be surprised if you find tumors on the outside of the fish...and in the body cavity.

haha was just planning a trip up there to hunt down some big bullies in jasper. i was there last year at this exact time and the water was beautifully clear! don't know what its like this year but i would assume that its is nice and clear. at old fort point just outside of town you can stand on the bridge and look down to see all the white fish stacked up with the odd bull cruising around for a meal! very cool to see plus the fishing in that location can be pretty productive. For whites i would reccomend some small nymphs fished deeper under an indicator such as copper jons, prince nymphs and hares ear variations dont be afraid to go down to sizes 18 to 20. For bullies chucking big streamers is the way to go not too complicated. Have fun man!

I wonder if the bulls are having a post spawning latent period?
One thing for sure, there are some pretty big monster bulls in that river out of Jasper.

Hey this is kinda a stupid question but... In two weeks the river edges shouldn't have too much ice on it.. Right? Will there be ice chunks floating down the river too?
Like I've i haven't been there around this time of year...

Don't know. How well does your crystal ball work? Currently, there is no ice along the banks. The river is quite low and clear, which is normal for this time of year. If we do get a really cold spell, then you may run into ice along the shore, but you should still be able to fish it without any problems.
This picture was taken on Nov. 3 where the Maligne River enters the Athabasca.
