Default How to Stop Tip-ups from freezing...?

Hey guys,

Over the weekend I was finding it difficult to detect fish on my HT windless tip-up because it was freezing up.
This is the first year I've used tip-ups, and I do know that they eventually freeze, but are there any tips you guys have to slow the water from freezing? Maybe a styrofoam covering?
I know that you can purchase "thermal" tip-ups, but I like the windless one because it moves the bait...

Thanks

styrofoam covering

available at The fishing Hole and Wholesale Sports an prolly BPS.

You might want to try the vinyl covered tipup lines too. They are supposed to work well on these types of tip ups.

I will also be trying out some vinyl covered line this year as well.

Actually I think I suggested that last winter LOL and the more antifreeze you consume the longer the hole stays open.
I find after you catch a big pike and release it good karma and pikeslime keep the ice off.

Paint a cork black and put it in the hole or use cardboard or old carpet to cover the holes. Cut them in circles the diameter of the bottom of your icefishing pail and they take up very little room.

Pour a heavy sugar water syrup in the hole sugar water is a natural antifreeze
of sorts thats why tree sap freezes at a lower temp. And it makes the fish sweeter.

I use a simple peice of cardboard with a 1 inch slit for the line to fit through, when it gets really cold i cover it with a bit of snow. This doesnt work when the bite is on, but then you don't have to worry about the hole freezing if your always hauling fish through it.

It's not a perfect solution but works well for me.

Thanks everyone! I think the glucose solution is cool, but I think the foam cover is the most practical/cheap, so Ill go with that.
As for the urine, I'll just take your guy's word for it hahaha!

For a good slow down method for feezing,,, when you drill your hole don't move the ice chips away, leave them there and pour water on the hill of ice to soldify it.

An old guy the other day had plastic clothespegs cliped on his line, so when he jigged it broke the begining of freeze over.
