Iv'e had anglertitis since the day i could cast my first line.I grew up chasing trout in beavers ponds west of calgary, however population growth has moved into some of the best spots around,so ponds that once held 10 pound brownies or 5 pound brookies are gone.taught myself how to fly fish, and now im into trolling big water (i like to measure my fish in pounds not inches)and now im into re-inventing the wheel on how i catch fish in my local streams.Example..im using a killer bass method to catch trout and when my buddies or other people see what im doing they think im crazy and i get some weird looks, but it works so well that i don't have a problem with 20 other guys fishing the same strech of river and i'll still catch fish right behind them.So coming up with new methods of fishing or catching fish is what im into at the moment besides getting into those big big bows in lwr k like we did this last summer.

Currently just flyfishing (for 30 years now), but in the past (from 40 years ago up until about 6 years ago) also a lot of spinning, spincasting, and baitcasting (with hardbaits).

I would say that 98% of my fishing is flyfishing these days, but I still enjoying my regular spin rod, and I'm planning on getting out ice fishing a few times this year as well.

Thanks guys for all the information! Its interesting to see all the statistics, I didn't know so many people baitcast (I never see people use them.). I'm also SUPER surprised to see so many spey fishers!!!! If the numbers are true then that's pretty cool... For all the spey fishers out there; what setup do you have? Skagit, Scandi, or Traditional?

Oh yeah? That's really cool! So I assume you've tried other styles? I mean Scandinavian is the most popular style these days....

I am doing the 'modern' style, but really want to get into traditional, or possibly Scandi.

I disagree that scandi is the MOST popular... but its my favorite. I've tried traditional but wasn't as sucessful with that, as I am with scandi.

What don't you like about Skagit (modern)? Or do you just want to try something different? If you get a Scandi head you can just replace it with the Skagit heads.

I got a couple setups but I use, 540 grain 34' #8/9, for pike/salmon/steelhead
I use 270 grain 29' #4/5 for bulls and browns in alberta rivers.

I just prefer the longer rods and style of traditional, but I am not certain that a traditional set-up would be of much use to me in Alberta (which is where I do 75% of my fishing).

Where do you spey for pike?
Just a suggestion, if you have a 270 grain, then it might be time to try Switch rods... Those are really cool, and if you use lighter lines like that, then it might be something to consider! (And by the way friend, you don't need to post the single-handed flyline weight, because its not accurate compared to the grain value )

Traditional setup would probably only be useful for you in the bigger rivers like NSR and Athabasca, etc... Because you need A LOT of casting room with traditional and even Scandi. But if you mostly spey fish big rivers, then you should be alright.

That is the thing...I love the idea, history, beauty, and art of trad spey, but bigger rivers are difficult to come by here....I miss the Thompsons in BC.

You spey still-water? That is VERY uncommon and not very successful, does it work for you? Got some pics of spey-pike ?

I have been mastering my Spey technique on the waters of the Pembina River trying to catch the elusive Red Horse Sucker, commonly known in local vernacular as the "whistling trout."
Oh but I sure long for that Thompson River where only better people fish.
If you know what I mean
