You could probably get out on French Bay. Pretty good track to point. But would be tough off the track. Was there today fishing slow only 1

Sorry I missed your post about the ice thickness, we had our first kid and things ahve been crazy. French bay was about 19" and the bite was slow, didnt see much on my flasher so we went out by the marina and the ice was about 14". This was about 3 weeks ago though. So I'm not sure on the conditions now.

Here's some pictures.

French bay was hot yesterday, lots between 6-8lbs and a few double digits. Beat the weekend rush and today headed into the bush for walleye. Good luck fishing this weekend!

I wonder about some of these guys coming to Cold Lake and catching 50-60 trout in a day. Get your limit and move on to another species. Its no wonder why the regs are changing. People like this are ruining it. Probably hundreds of Dead/wasted trout floating under the ice or laying on bottom. Go find the Walleye...you are aloud to keep 3 of them per person.

Agree 100%. I've researched lake trout mortality rates as best I could on the Internet and studies in general indicate about 15-20%. If this is correct then catch and release of 60 fish is killing 12 of them. Kind of makes a limit of one over 65 cm a bit meaningless.

I couldn't agree with you more, McShaft! An old-timer gets nailed for keeping his one fish of the day, and yet these guys come in and ruin the fishery with their catch and release, (aka, catch and kill). And with the new regs requiring a 75 cm. limit, they can catch and kill so many more.

Well to start i have been catch and relese and barbless since 1987 when i started guiding for lakers ,even liveing in alberta for 25yrs no barbs .so i fish cold about 4 to 5 times a winter not in summer i would say i catch about 100 trout a season so i might lose about 10 to 15 fish a winter even though we are always ready for quick release with tools always on me and camera ready if we take picks .so say SOME locals fish every weekend about 14 in a winter they take home 1 every time out thats about 14 fish not counting fishing in the summer ,i also might take 1 or 2 a season home ones that would not have made it ,its great fishery and im going to keep enjoying it cheers.

This is getting so old... You know what, just got off the lake from another good day catchin lakers, and was just saying how i didnt even have to use plyers in two days, didnt even have any bleed, not a drop on the ice.all hooked in the lip. Its the same thing with bringing them up to quick... Ever watch them swim from 100+ feet to ten feet in seconds? They are built to do it. I LIKE catching lakers, i dont want to just catch one and go fish for something else. Im looking to catch and release BIG lake trout. Id like to see the studies that say 15-20% mortality, i bet its probably under 10, which is the average on most C&R rivers, and all the ones i fish seem to be doing pretty well! And you cant argue that its different with lake trout because they are slow growing. Look at the Bull trout population, they are slow growing, strickly catch and release, and recovering!!! I can keep going.... Find aomething better to complain about!!!

I don't think you offended anyone, you just annoyed a lot of people. Then there are the others posters that tagged along in agreement. It is hard for me to fathom someone getting upset about another catching too many fish...what do you think fishing is about??????? Maybe you should consider taking up another sport where you don't get so upset. Strange days these be...

35 Whelen, congrats!!! That sounds like a day anyone should be envious of. Please don't feel any need to justify yourself. For every hater, there are another dozen of us cheering you on. Best of luck next trip out!

It seems like when numbers caught like 50-60 are posted that when it hits a nerve with some folk. With numbers posted like that, people will flock to the lake expecting the same. And thus starts the pilgrammage. Funny how folks will keep their perch Lake X and numbers caught there tight lipped. Guess thats just the way it is. The posts here are mainly from non-locals, so it should be expected that it will strike the nerves of most locals. Maybe numbers caught should not be given, but just a say "we caught a few"!! And if the lake is not named, people may think they came from Moose Lake.

As of saturday if you stayed on the beaten path you will be fine if you have a 4wd truck. Just don't venture to far off the main path.
