Default comorants and more cormorants

Howdy,

After recently fishing a couple of local lakes and a short trip up to a few lakes around the Rich Lake area I got to pondering. Have there always been as many double crested cormorants around as there is now?

Having fished a number of these lakes form the early 1970's I don't recall seeing them around. Certainly not as many as I saw at Fork Lake. There had to have been at least a hundred or more.

I do recall seeing a few way back in the 80's at Lac La Biche but never at any other lakes we fished up that way or any others lakes for that matter.

I'm curious as to whether there has been any studies done regarding the population of these birds and the impact they have on fisheries?

After seeing a few scarf down some good sized perch and trout I'd guess with the growing numbers they are having an impact.

Any theories or observations would be appreciated.

Thanx.

See post 5 on the other thread started on the same subject on the fishing forum.

Definitely a recent problem. In the late 70's cormorants were on the endangered species list.

Certainly never endangered on the east coast in my lifetime, open season year round like the varmints they are.
FWIW,a merganser can eat upwards of 20 salmon parr/day.....I suspect a cormorant could easily eat twice that?
At one time I would pass on them stinkn ol fish ducks and conserve shells when they flew past my blind....not anymore.

I have put a question forth to F&W to see if a licensed falconer could use cormorants for fishing like the chinese do. No answer back yet.
I was into falconry a few years ago and cormorant fishng could be a neat way of going for perch.

Neat idea, but I don't think so. Isn't there a specific species list of falcons allowed to be kept for falconry?

There is a better use for cormorants anyway. Bear bait. Not saying I have, but I sure would like to. It is beyond my understanding as to why we must let a population explode and destroy so much before we take action. Snow geese, wolves, grizzlys, cormorants etc. we have changed the environment, therefore we must manage it.
