Wolf Hunt

Hello Folks,

I would love to try wolf hunting, but have never done it and no idea where to start.

Just wondering if anyone is out there willing to take a rookie along for a wolf hunt, so that I can learn a bit?
I am in calgary, have gun, quad & truck and experience with deer, elk, moose and I am an early riser.

Frick it can be heart breaking. Alot of guys aroung here bait them. not sure how succesfull they are. Yesterday i spotted one just off the road. he spooked. so i grabbed the rifle and went for a walk howling a few times. with in 5 minutes there was 3 different wolfs in 3 directions howling back. the closest the wolf i had seen (big grey bugger) was i guess about 150 yards in the bush. Spent 5 hrs tracking and calling to him in knee deep snow. Finally i got a shot off at him and missed. Baffled i figued out that the rifle is shooting a we bit high. So spent sometime getting the gun back inline. wont let that happen again. throughout the day i could here wolfs howling randomly but they seems to be along way off

hunting wolves ..hmmm.

1 you need fresh snow
2 hit the roads before lite, drive steadily and before other traffic
3 find fresh tracks and determine pack size
4 assume general direction of travel, upwind, crosswind or are they just simply following the road
5 mutter to yourself 'that was close' and go for breakfast
actually,
ive purposefully used a predator call and been succesful only twice. a rabbit is only a appetizer at best, but you catch a solo, lazy or wounded one.
wolfing is more of a oppurtunity of circumstances, ying meets yang, kinda thing.
but if do meet one at close range...they look right through you. makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck, very erie.
depending on how far you are from the sled/quad/truck you may want to consider skinning it on site. dragging a coyote through the snow is one thing but a wolf is a difrent story. oh ya, you may even get a crack at more than one at a time, so have a full mag.

this one came in while rattling for whitetails
jeffy launched 33-378 wby round and promptly settled it down

Get real lucky and shoot one! Only shot one in alberta nice white one 10 yrs ago.Good luck

I'm with you,I would love to shoot a wolf too.But nevr knew how to go about it either.

Probably getting a little late, to get a good hide. I suggest you wait till the fall.

I found when lookin for wolves good hotspots are up north of LaCorey see them on a regular bases and try moose calling or lost calf. If baiting them a nice roadkill moose drop it off in thick muskeg cutlines call for coyotes and leave it for a while with a game tracker camera, works pretty good.

Wolves respond well to calling. It is an exciting way to hunt and there is no shortage of wolves in Alberta.

I would be willing to take guys out in the High Level area. We bait around here and have good luck taking wolves. Let me know.

If you are up in the bonnyville area this fall around december or end of november I should have my baits out and have wolves on camera, if you are interested.

I have called them in while calling for coyotes, but have yet to shoot one. They are unlike a coyote and are toguher to get in, and friggin smart. The last place you think they'll come is where they'll often be...and again maybe not.
Called one time on a high bank along a river's back channel. 2 yotes come flying the river and there was no way of getting them to stop. Few minutes later the birds went absolutely friggin nuts behind us, turned to look back and there was a nice black wolf staring at me at about 40 yds through the timber. That's as close as I've come.

I've had "quite a few" encounters while hunting other species. I shot one while stalking around looking for a bear (the second one I saw that morning), I missed one (curse!) that was part of a group, right after we checked a cow carcass, I've seen a small pack running across the open at dusk when coming back from sheep hunting (eerie feeling it gives you to see them running at a cut-off course with you!), and saw one running across the field as we pulled into a pasture driving towards our bear bait. Most of these were were in the foothills. Only once did we go out specifically to find wolf, and came up empty of course.
