Merc 2 stroke oil ???

I have on my- new to me- boat a 150hp optimax merc., 2002, which has less than 100hrs. running time on it and am wondering what brands of oils can be run in it. Is quick silver the only one ? Is their oil that much better ? Or is it safe to use other oils that meet the type spec.. I don't want to pooch the engine for a couple of bucks esp, not a 150.. Thx.. Prob. won't get any response till everyone is home after the weekend..lol

I had a merc years ago and the dealer implied quicksilver was what I should buy. It was about 4 times more exspensive than others. After some research there is very little diff in them all. I know ite very costly but I use synthetic 2 stroke oil now in my outboards chain saws and ice augers the diff is very noticable

I have been running Ansoil synthetic in my 240 sportjet for 3 yrs. with no problems. We buy ours in bulk by the barrel, myself and a couple of other guys chip in and we save a few bucks.

I've used Petrocan oil since my 40 hp Merc was new, have had 0 problems. Motor's 10 years old and has seen quite a bit of use. It's a TCW3 oil and case buying it was a fraction of the price of Merc/Quicksilver. Newer ones specify synthetic, and I think that's for emissions purposes, not lube capability. All the same if I had a new big outboard I'd probably stick with the synthetic - oil's cheap compared to the gas nowadays, even synthetic oil.

Check the manual for the specifications on your motor as far as the oil goes,and then buy whatever brand you like, synthetic is the better choice for all engines but if you keep up the maintenance you can use regular oil, PS: keep reciepts for whatever you do to the engine so if something goes wrong you can prove you did the changes etc. on time

I also use the amsoil in my optimax if you read the back of the label it is approved for merc warraty and is 1/4 the price of merc oil.

id check the manual first and formost...i always run synthetic oil in everything...till i got my new boat...apperently you cant run synthetic with super chargers.....that would have cost me alot of cash...good thing i cheacked..
