Called it a day early. Should have hung around, the weather is a lot better today but we were having mechanical issues - the DEF system on my truck packed it in.
We saw a grand total of 1 deer. A mule doe that spooked when we turned around on a track. We would never have seen her if we kept driving.
Walked a decent amount both days, nothing excessive but around 5km each day. Saw a huge amount of tracks; deer, elk and moose and lots of scat. There are plenty of deer there, we saw 3 guys pull 4 deer by 1pm yesterday and another truck with 3 guys had 4 deer at end of legal light yesterday. We just couldn't find them. Tough with just me and a junior - we couldn't push any bush and the ground was noisy as hell. Spoke to people at check-out that had seen plenty of deer in the exact same spots we had been looking at roughly the same times we were there. We just couldn't get a break.

Thumbs up

That's good elk totals I would say, moose #s should hit there goals and deer seem to be down. Hopefully I get my moose draw next year.

Were any of this weeks elk bulls? Were any big if they were? I'm thinking that crew of base employees sounded like they knew what they were doing. Are they responsible for two of the three?

So just wondering if the moose totals include the 14 moose harvested by the group that does not have to fill in hunting surveys for the rest of the province?
we all apply for draws to hunt moose on Camp Wainright and they are allowed in to harvest moose.
If the totals do include the "special people" harvest then I guess the goal has been achieved to reduce animals out there.
Just saying

what are you crying about? You sound like a few other posters who always whine about certain people.

The vast majority seemed to have enjoyed the hunt. Yet here you are trying to whine and complain.. we"ll put you in the 1 percent who didnt enjoy themselves.

Mmmm ... relax Silly, not whining or crying here, just wondering as stated, about totals. I don't mind waiting an extra two years to get drawn, no problem. we draw and wait then try to get undersubscribed here up north.

Both bull elk I saw pictures of were 6x6 and would be between 250-300" if I could guess, I didn't see either in person.

Are they looking at trying to bring the moose population on the base down? Looking at the harvest results year over year they've been going up over the last few years with more tags being issued it seems.

3 seasons...20 Bulls /40-45 cows per season is my understanding. 190 total for a target with 100% success rate.

The totals include all moose harvested. So yes the 11 moose that were FN kills if that is what you are asking.
Lol, I wasnt looking for attention, just curious was all as im a P8 on either sex elk and am considering doing the hunt one year. Started applying years ago when i wanted to do Cypress, and it has been several years since i applied for that draw, but it seems like a shame to let it sit there and never take advantage of the hunt. Wouldnt mind trying Camp Wainwright out just for the experience, but still interested in what guys have been getting onto out there. Thanks for info!

The numbers have been added. The second one you saw is more than that. I'll send you better pics once I get them off my camera. The phone pics suck.

I never thought I would have a check station stalker...just too bad it's a dude!

Only 2 more days! Hoping the weather holds outs for the guys left. We have averaged around 50-60 deer hunters the past few days not sure how many will show if it gets colder!

For those on the fence for the weekend.

Yesterday the best WT was taken (160 class), a few 150-160 mule this week, today a real beaut of a 50" moose and lots of elk sightings again. So the numbers might be down but still some decent animals coming out.

Had a great time as usual this year! My wife's moose was 36" and was #136. We saw lots of moose and she even passed up a few! I'm looking forward to being back next year for cow moose and deer. Sorry for keeping you guys waiting around on Thursday night! Thanks again!

Well it was no luck for my first time hunting the base. It was a very well organized event, and a different hunt than what I'm used to. I had fun, and I will be back.

I think that the weather definitely played a factor these last few days.
My nephew and I enjoyed the hunt , the areas we were in it felt like a deer could pop out at anytime although none did. Lol. We finally seen some deer so we knew the tracks weren't being made by ghosts.. only 10 mins till first shot . It's almost like they get a copy of the briefing too.. lol. 8 moose again yesterday only 1 was a small bull. We checked out a bit early 3pm but my nephew had a hockey game , we knew if we didn't get anything by 3 ish we would come home empty handed. We will be back and will be trying to get in the earlier seasons maybe. Met some good people and had fun , still better just to get out then sitting around thinking about hunting..
Well organized and we appreciated all the hard work done by all involved!!
