Default Antelope mount

Here is a piece I did for the Montana Taxidermy competition last weekend that we attended. I entered in the Masters division and got a second place with these two. Even though they are not the biggest horned antelope, they had nice capes and went together really nice. They show communication between each other. The next time you shoot an animal that may not have the biggest antlers or horns, have a look at the cape and maybe you can try and turn it into a real nice show piece, Thanks

Congrats on the placing/award. Great looking mounts. Is there a web site to see the rest of the mounts at the competition.

Yes , very nice mounts, can't say that I remember ever seeing a double mount like that . Quite the angle on the headgear of that one fellow . ( not knowing much about these guys , would that much of an angle make it " non-typical " ?

And if you only took second ,with such a well done and unique mount , I can't imagine , what ever took first , must look like .

What kind of criteria is involved in the judging ?

again well done

In taxidermy judging in all divisions, everything is looked at. Interior nostrils to drumming of the hide, every part of the animal is felt for accuracy and knowledge of the specimen. They go over them with a flashlight looking at pupil placement, they makes sure all the animal parts are where they are supposed to be and put back into the mount, right down to the glands and membranes in the eyes. Novice, Professional and Masters are all judged in the same way, maybe a little forgiveness to the Novice category and not so much in the Pro division and Masters is the least forgiveness. The Montana Association has some pretty top notch taxidermists that come to the competition and there was some beautiful work there. Thanks

Awesome mount Curtis. I love the difference between the two capes. Must say I've never seen a throat patch like that one.

Jim..

Excellent expression on both antelope. You have brought both back to life. If they were full body mounts they would walk away.

Great looking mounts! I'd love to cross paths with one like the weird one at some point, that's a once in a lifetime goat that's for sure

Looks great together, just curious as to why someone would shoot a antelope buck that is so small? Was it hit by a car and picked up?

I think the person loves antelope meat. Not taking this thread off topic in regards to ethics of shooting a smaller animal. It only needs to be legal to come in the shop. Thanks for the kind words everyone

Did not mean to be negative, just not the antelope most would shoot after waiting 10 plus years, but each to their own. Sorry once again

Hey no prob. This one was shot two years ago and I know in that zone 151/152, you couldn't find one over twelve inch that year. It took a bit for the mount to be decided on that is why it took that long but I know fast forwarding to this past fall, we got some really good antelope from that zone. On the way back from the competition we seen hundreds of antelope along the hiways so its looking up for whoever is looking at getting a tag this year
