On my back down to Calgary on Sunday stopped off at the RDR. I'm starting to think this river is more than just good looks
Fishing was stupid good. Goldeye are out in force now. First 7 or so casts had fish attached. One of the Goldies was massive! I'm guessing 3 lbs. Definitely my biggest by far to date. No pics of it. I tried hand landing it and it got off. Just an awesome specimen! The one in the pic below is half as big as the one that got away. Best part, I had switched to dry fly. The brown drake hatch is crazy good. Huge bugs! At the end of the evening they were very, very thick. It was very cool catching gold eye after gold eye on the dry. They do that jump and shake like a tarpon would but with a little less weight behind it
. Only thing is they decimate dry flies with their teeth - as in quickly. Switched back to nymphing and caught my PB rocky white. This thing was not as long as my longest but beat any I've caught on girth. Looked more like a lake white other than those funny tell tale lips.
About the average gold eye - the get big in that river
Holy tank!
