X2. if I was fishing to feed my family, or survival I would use hooks with barbs, but I've pulled enough hooks out of my hand to see the light.

Maybe I'm the only one who is confused by the original post.

If the law was legally passed and ratified, making barbed hooks illegal, why would the F&W be REQUIRED to receive a memo outlining a new regulation change in order for the regulation change to become enforceable?

I would assume, when new laws are passed, it is likely, the enforcement officers get together to discuss, clarify and form enforcement strategies ............. no different when you get a new form, or process to follow at work really........

I'm not sure I understand the issue - it is still illegal to use a barbed hook ...... if you are caught using a barbed hook you are breaking the law ............

Lets see how big this one gets!

I here from a reliable source that,

Calling lake limit for next year is going to 3 wallies with no size limit.

Also Wabamun is open next year with, 1 pike no size restriction, and walleye open to 1 in the 46 to 54 slot size.

Wonder where these rumors will go? LOL

Q#3 in item3 talks about barbless, but it seems there is no standard test to check the hooks yet?

Default Alex... the answer is "What regulation is F&W not longer enforcing"

Hello Sun,

Thank you for contacting the ESRD Information Centre. Yes that is true, that barbed hook legislation is no longer being enforced.

Fish and Wildlife officers have ceased charging people for using barbed hooks, and will not swear tickets issued since the change in the legislation.

Please feel free to contact if you require any more information.

Cheers,

Anyone know how to put barbs back on the 200-300 plugs, lures, spoons I ground off with my dremel?

Gonna put big trebles on all my hooks cause the barbs are huge on them! See if I can hook a big one and keep him on better!

Irregardless, i'll be staying barbless, makes life easier on me and the fish...

I can just imagine the carnage on the Bow when this gets out.

Would anyone be interested in a barbed hook maggot drift fishing tournament on the bow next fall?

Should be killer fishing!

Btw, anyone know how many maggots you can skewer on a jig head?

Can't be any worse than the platoons of guys already out there, thrashing the surface to a foam, wading through spawning habitat, draping the branches in their back cast with a season appropriate tinsel of snagged flouro etc.

The Bow will be fine.

Banning trebles would make a much bigger difference than banning barbs.

Big trebles hurt small trout. The effect of barbs on mortality is statistically insignificant.

An interesting question is,

How much better a fishery could the Bow be?

I'd be stoked to hear some opinions on that from guys who have fished the river for a few decades.

Default frikkin barbs

Hate to burst some peoples bubbles, but Ive fished the Bow in the Calgary area for more than 40 years, with barbs. bet there were far fewer floaters than you could find in any day the last few years, people have to play fish harder and longer to keep them on the hooks with no barbs, no slack and balls to the wall drag. bet it killed a lot more fish than giving them a little slack and letting them rest during the fight with barbs on the hook. I hate the barbless rule, no scientific proof that it helps fish, in fact just the opposite. and if its easier to get a hook out of the fisherman? maybe the fisherman should be a bit more frikkin careful??? just another political move with no legit reasoning behind it. For myself, if I left the barbs on my hooks I would have landed another 30 fish easy just in the last 10 days, so guess what, Im not squishing barbs anymore until and unless they make it illegal legally. dont like it? stay off my sidewalk.

Thanks Sun, a real eyeopener. Not sure how this will change my fishing approach, maybe I will continue to pinch the barbs. I just wish they would have made more public, kinda shady i.m.o.

BeeGuy, the Bow would be better if there was more caddis around like in the 70's. During that time there was pods of rising fish gorging on bugs every night (and it started at 7pm, not 10pm). Better sewage system today has dropped the productivity in the river from amazing to very high. You're right in thinking it is still an awesome place to play.

Call SRD in the AM.

Alternatively, you could sneak through their office vents rappel down from the ceiling in order to avoid the laser grid, and take some micrographs of their top secret barbed/barbless internal memos.

The only question that remains is how high up this goes (my guess is Trudeau).

Looks like they may have already gotten to the OP.
