Imagine if ice fishing was split into a separate group. Wouldn't be too much happening now in there now and even less in 2 or 3 weeks from now. Somebody wanting to know ice conditions today for fly fishing somewhere may not think of looking at a post in ice fishing where someone may have posted ice conditions for safety's sake. Eg.-Ghost, Spray or even Chain lakes south of Calgary. In reverse, in the fall, someone may not think of looking in fly fishing forum to see when ice started forming on a certain lake before they head out.
All in all, this one with everything combined moves nicely and I feel that people would move from one to another as the seasons change, thereby possibly missing something that they would otherwise have known.

I think its a great idea. I hunt with a rifle and a bow, but only access those forums when it gets close to that time. Currently its fishing season and that's what i read now. So to argue that it would only get used certain times of the year is probably true. But that's what's happening now with the other forums.

100% agree with this.
I frequent several fly fishing forums.
I enjoy this one because it's much broader in perspective. Don't lose that.

No, I don't think there's any need to split it off on it's own. It's all part of fishing and I'm happy loooking at all posts regardless of it's specific topic.

I don't feel it's necessary, there are plenty of other niche forums for fly fishing, I think you should stick to the model that has worked so well for AO.

Please, I do not want to hear that we need a "this" forum or a "that" forum because anything other than a Fly-fishing Forum will NOT be considered or even responded to. So, NO to an Ice-fishing Forum etc.
Thanks for your input.

you've received quite a bit of feedback here Rob. did any of it help you make any decisions one way or another? thanks.

It looks like more favour the fly-fishing forum than those that don't. Having said that, the number is still quite close, which tells me we probably have it right the way it is. So for now, there will be no fly-fishing forum but I reserve the right to revisit this thread in the future.
Thanks everybody!

I would favour a fly fishing thread.
If as person doesn't see the value in a separate thread, no one is forcing them to ever visit it.

I'm ambidextrous, fly fish with my right, spin cast with my left. I also think a busy forum creates more interest and activity. Splitting forms of fishing up might create dead space at times, causing lack of interest and less members contributing. I can easily weed through the topics that interest me in the "fishing discussions" the way it is now. BTW, i'm a new member, so my opinion shouldn't count for much, but congrats and high five on a great AO forum!!

I would have supported a Fly forum but my time is also limited to cruise many different forums, so Rob's decision seems like the best rational to keep all together for now...

Good call
Thanks for keeping the page the same! All i do is flyfish but I don't need a flyfishing only page. I come this board to see where the action is and what's goin on on different bodies of water throughout the province. I dont need a flyfishing only page for that. If a bunch of gear huckers or bait flingers are catchin fish like crazy at Travers then I know the fishing is good there and I can get em on fur and feathers! The more people fishin and posting on any site, the better it is for info! Keep it as broad as possible.

Maybe a tying section would be worthwhile, for pics to be posted in. A place for people to show what they are tying, and make them easier to find and see.
Other than that this format seems to work pretty well.

IMHO....leave it as is.
Like someone mentioned having flyfishing on a separate forum would create a "dead zone" during winter months....keep it all together that way all the trouble makers are in one place
