Default 25-06 and 115 gr Berger elk penetration

Just finished my last elk roast and lo and behold I damn near chipped a tooth on a bullet fragment. This elk was shot thru the forehead at around 30 yards with a 25-06 115 gr Berger vld. I'm gonna guess that the bullet fragment traveled 4' or more of meat to become lodged in the back strap. Not bad penetration I figured considering the fragment is about 1/4" square by a 1/16" deep.

Good penetration for sure...hard on the teeth though!

You couldn't give me a lifetime supply of them free.Had them explode at 500 + 600 yards on elk like a shotgun with a 168gr from a .300 RUM.Our party lost a couple deer with broadside shoulder hits from 50 yards to 250 yards.Recovered bullet base fragment weighed 10gr from the original 130gr .270 Only use Partitions, Scirocco II' and Barnes X now.Your mileage may vary........flame on.................Harold

This just cannot be. It cannot. I have read many times, even on this forum, that those bullets explode on impact and do not work. Next thing you know, people will be trying to say that a 270 can kill moose too. Stop this foolish talk before things spiral out of control

Sns truth be told I don't generally hunt with my 25-06 but I figured I'd take it that day for some reason.

Harold I'm a fan of barnes as well but couldn't get them to shoot very good out of my rifle. I've seen the rum work once. If it's the one I'm thinking about. First I've heard it not working but Eric would probably keep that to himself. Lol.

You've got elk steaks. Really doesn't get much better than that. You've got a chipped tooth...it'll buff out.

I harvested a paper target with a 150gr partition.

It punched a single hole in the paper, it must not of broke apart in flight. LOL.

True story

Shoot the heaviest for caliber bullet you can. A 168 out of a RUM???? Why?? Try a 215 or 230 gr and then post your results. The 215 is simply amazing especially at extended ranges. I'm not saying Berger is the best thing out there, but use them for what they are designed to do and they work great. Killed lots of deer with various calibers and all with Bergers. 115,140 and 215 gr. Closest shot was 30 yds. Farthest 734. All DRT.

Got a pic of the head that was shot? Did any of the fragments exit the head?I'm thinking maybe a fragment exited the head at an angle passed 4 feet through the air then struck and pinholed through the hide and lodged in the backstrap?

It was probably a shot from the year before.

Or a chunk of 22 rimfire from somebody trying to move the elk on or away from someplace, or for another nefarious reason.

Strange thing happened indeed.
I shot bull moose between his eyes couple years ago at 40 yds with 300 wsm and 200 gr sierra GK. The bullet never exited the head and stuck inside of it.
Honestly , can not see 115 gr from 25-06 doing better then 300wsm and 200 gr .Barnes tsx or something monometallic probably could but even then 4 feet of penetration after going through the head sounds very unrealistic to me.
Elk probably was shot before by another hunter.
Just my guess
Cheers!

The only thing I can say foresure is that I only shot it once. If it was from my rifle it is impressive penetration. Imo

I have shot a elk once a couple years back that had a .277 in it. All I found was the copper jacket just inside the hide.
