Dad and i hunted 166 last year for moose and it was the same thing there as far as numbers go.pretty sad compared to what it once was for big bulls but thats what handing out too many tags does to trophy quility/overall population...wont be returning.

Zone 230 is the same, I live here and biggest bull I have seen might go 38” wide and numbers are definitely down. 98 bull and 98 cows given out this year from what I saw will decimate the remaining numbers.

Your answer lies within here
https://www.albertarelm.com/cust.Dra...istorical.page
You will also discover why there are no mule deer left as well

Sounds like a cash grab for the government . Selling moose tags in an area that have no moose .Lol
You really have to do your own scouting before applying for a tag in an area you are going to hunt in . I always find scouting an area the year before while doing a deer hunt works the best .

Same here… I’ve got a bull tag in 160 and have only seen one since early archery season. Used to be, if you went to the “good” areas, you could see a dozen every day.
Doesn’t help that the two quarters at the north end of the lake were sold.
The hand hills and the river valley are about the best places i can think of to check. But it was hoping to tag out in a stubble field where i can drive right to it!

Try hunting for moose in 166 this year. Everyone I have phoned for permission and ran into hunting has a bull moose tag. Finally got one this year. Dad shot one last year and only seen one other bull the whole season. This year mule and whitetail have been non existent. I’m glad the government was handing tags out like water the last few years… the management for fish and game in this province is stupidity at its finest.

They went after the deer first
Then they went after the elk
Now they are after the moose
Pretty sad management
Alberta is not what it used to be

Yup, and telling us to keep the breeder northern pike. What retard come up with that? Had the limit of ten jacks years ago and then brought the size in. Pure stupidity. One would ponder they are out to destroy hunting and fishing on purpose.

It really does seem like intentional mismanagement. And to think I used to complain about things 15 years ago lol, those were the glory days of hunting and fishing (in my lifetime).

Yaa its such a nice area, its really to bad.I think if your a good hunter and willing to walk you will still get a moose but if your after a trophy bull it has gone to pot and aint worth it in 166 anymore.
Dad shot a 3.5 year old bull on opening day last fall and some guys who hunted there all fall told us it was the biggest they saw that year and it was a little 36"er

I had the same experience in 166 last year. The year before buddy got a decent one and said they'd seen a better one the day before but couldn't make a stalk happen. I pulled my tag and could barely find a bull until the last weekend of the season and it was just a freezer filler. I was happy to have atleast had something to show for my efforts...lol

I don’t know what was up on Saturday, but we saw moose all over the place… had planned on going into the hills south of Delia for first light, but fog killed that idea. We saw a cow calf pair in the valley in the truck headlights on the way, so we made our plan to hunt the valley in hopes that the fog was at higher elevations. On the drive to the river, we saw another cow with twins.
Getting to the river, we right away saw a decent bull on the far side of the river, but on land we couldn’t hunt. We kept going and soon saw two more - a tiny bull and a small bull, walking along the river shore. We quickly ditched the truck, hiked back to where we saw them, and snuck into a good shooting location.
I had drawn the tag, but had set my 17 year old as a youth partner on the license so he could get his first moose. He set up and made a great shot on the bull, who unfortunately died in the middle of the river… i learned yesterday that the red deer river is COLD in mid November! We rigged up some rope and were able to pull him to shore and then up the cliff to the truck.
We were hoping for a big bull for the wall, but after the terrible archery season and early rifle season, we were happy with any legal bull for some amazing table fare. Can’t wait for some moose steaks!

Was just in 160 yesterday. Put on many miles through places that have historically held lots of deer. All I can say is it's a sad state of affairs down there now.
Saw 9 MD does, 2 MD bucks (145-150"), 1 WT buck, and no moose.
10 years ago I would have seen 150-200 deer between all those spots.
Counted 6 old carcasses while traipsing through the buck brush. All 6 months to 2 years old.
I fear CWD has got a good hold now.
Sad state indeed.

that is the product of mismanagement of game animals. Way to many tags issued and way to many females harvested. I’m not against people harvesting females but I personally won’t and don’t allow it on any of our property. The deer numbers are down in 166 and 158 also. To many tags and lots of folks harvesting females.

Dont you just get a general tag from the 500’s to hunt a 160 moose anyway?
