Coyotes: Do Not Start Early!!!
I know lots of young trappers, Hutterite trappers, and many others who don’t have the fur knowledge of others, thus a word of advice to those rearing to go trapping and get an early start to the season….
Dont do it!
It would be very wise to hold off until the fur is developing underwool and this does not happen until at least Nov 15 and truthfully Dec 1 is even better!
So with price and demand currently off, it is wise to not produce inferior grade skins. The market would much prefer prime skins as they in turn become superior product.
October skins are flat, the hair has no body due to a total lack of underwool. November skins begin to develope that wool but there’s generally a 6” wide strip down the center of the back that primes last/later.
So in this coyote market downturn/stall-out, might as well just produce good skins, even if your buyer cant grade!
