I prefer minnows to smelt for everything aside from burbot, but that's just me.

Minnows are preferred. They seem to be firmer, fresher and seems to me, they catch more walleyes.

Yeah but smelts are cheaper...

I prefer to not use bait myself. Lures all the way!

Smelts are cheaper when you buy the one pound bag at superstore...We cut them into 3's today as usual and caught pike and walleye all day long....

Spot tail shiners are natural forage for walleye. Common in lakes and reservoirs. Walleyes prefer them and so do I.

Me too. Open water is lures for 99% of my fishing.

Ice is another thing, with more bait used, however, I caught more fish this ice season on lures.

The lures out-fished natural bait 5 to 1 for me this ice season.

I can fish shoulder to shoulder with fishermen at a "popular" spot on Sylvan. I use smelts exclusively and it's actually comical how badly smelts outfish minnows.
