Would you eat a fish out of the Sheep River (it flows through Okatokes)

I here the fish migrate to the bow river so.....i wouldnt eat one outa the bow....

Maybe above the falls the fish would be better eating?

Thanks all

Duane

Sheep River & tributaries
from headwaters downstream to the bridge at Indian Oils Day-use Site

June 16 to Oct. 31 – Trout limit 0; Bait Ban.
Nov. 1 to June 15 – CLOSED
from bridge at Indian Oils Day-use site downstream to Gorge Creek and tributaries (except Gorge Creek) - CLOSED
from Gorge Creek downstream to Highwood River – River only
June 16 to Aug. 31 – Trout limit 2; Cutthroat and Rainbow over 35 cm; Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; Maggots are the only bait allowed and only after Aug. 15.
Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 – Trout limit 0; Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; Maggots are the only bait allowed.
Nov. 1 to June 15 – CLOSED

If I'm right about which "falls" you are talking about, you can't take any fish out of there to eat. In areas you can, I'd eat the fish (well maybe not right around the okotoks sewage treatment plant), though I never have. Any fish I've ever caught on the sheep I've released.

What's wrong with fish from the Bow? The consumption advisory doesn't say you can't eat them.

the water that comes out of sewage plants is devoid of anything other then nitrogen. it gathers rain water and runoff just like any other stream. any river here is cleaner then the ocean anyway and especially farmed salmon.

Every body of water in this province has stuff like that in it from time to time. I wouldn't be too worried about up the Sheep. But each to his own.

I have and they taste no different from any other trout I've eaten. I ve never seen a trout with codons or tampon in its gut though.

Good reference information about the water quality of the Bow.
Become a keeper.
http://brk.kobblefish.com/issues/pollution

An excerpt from above link:

"Samples taken at the headwaters contain pesticides and persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs and DDT — these contaminants are also found in the resident fish. These pollutants leach into Bow Lake from glaciers that contain a legacy of long-range atmospheric transport of pollution from around the world"

Here's a good informative read. The 2010 report on the state of the whole watershed and individual sub basins including sheep river.

Don't be scared of eating a fish or two. I would be more worried about driving down QE II or Hwy. 1 to get to your fishing hole.

Why? Trout is best indicator of water contamination, they disappear if water is contaminated. Since Bow is full of different species of trout I assume it is safe to eat.

All the years I have fished the bow and it is many both above and below Carsland I have never seen anything like you are suggesting. Even when the Esso refinery was still there you never saw any of that stuff floating anywhere.

While I adhere to catch and release I have eaten trout from the Bow with no issues what so ever. And no even back in the day they did not taste like oil.

I commented on water quality earlier but fish quality....
Looking at the advisories on MyWildAlberta.com most of the warnings are based on eating one or more portions a week. That is 52 times a year before there is a toxicity concern. To eat one of two fresh caught trout in a season can't be lethal. If two fish are lethal, that person was meant to be thinned out of the herd.

http://mywildalberta.com/fishing/Saf...nAdvisory.aspx

No advisories on sheep creek or upper bow.

If there are PCBs and DDT that far upstream every stream is contaminated. You and I and almost everything alive has those already in our system. I will enjoy the occasional fish from the bow. Well that is if I could catch one small enough to eat.

If you follow this argument there is no safe fresh water on the planet. Even rain and snow are subject to contamination from environmental sources. Also might want to consider that most of that glacier ice they talk about is several thousand years old.

I agree totally. A person can't escape pollution anywhere on the planet. We can only adapt at this stage.

I posted these links so people can be more informed as to just what alot of people's efforts have established about the Bow watershed.
