Default Mule Deer Hunting Tips in WMU 102

I have an anterless mule deer tag. I have never hunted a mule deer before. Any Tips on where to look for them (ie. River flats, Coulees). I was also thinking about grabbing a whitetail tag. Any tips on where to look for them as well? It would be greatly appreciated. Last thing, how is the whitetails hunting in WMU 102 Sage Creek Grazing Area?

Don't. Bother hunting whitetail in that area. Hard to find whitetail there. Lots of mule deer. It will be easy pickings.

I was there years ago for a antelope hunt

saw mule deer and whitetail deer in the Sage creek grazing lease

went up high near the old homestead with my 75 CJ5 for the night

at day light as I lay on the ground open day spotting scope/binos/rifle

I counted 11 deer with 1/2 hour that appeared everywhere

heading home hit a snow storm that was intense took 20hrs to get to Hinton

I would be up there at least 1/2 before day light and watch

if you did some door knocking like I did the farmers are friendly

good luck on your hunt

At Sage Creek look for a ravine or coulee and follow it - staying low so you won't be sky-lighted. Take it slow and check out every fold and corner, particularly the scrub brush on small benches 1/2 way up the coulee walls. There's mulies in almost every coulee on that reserve. If you come across willow patches, you may find some whitetails there as well. Good luck!

Don't have any advice on the area but you should always have a WT tag in your pocket. One year I was tagged out and mule deer hunting with a friend, he didn't buy his WT tag and guess what we saw.....GIANT WT. I said holy smokes shoot that whitey, he said I didn't buy a tag.... I said you didn't do what???

Hunted 102 a few years ago for Antelope I think we seen more WT bucks then Mules to be honest. We didn't see a great population of Mules for the 3 days we were in the Zone best of luck. Pound some roads and find them shouldn't be hard to find a mule doe.

I mule deer hunt in 104 but same strategy applies. Find a coulee, creep up to the edge and see what’s in it. Back out so that you can’t be seen, like 50 yards or so from the edge. Walk 100-200 yards or so depending on the contour of the coulee and creep up and peer over the edge again. Repeat. Make sure you have the wind in your favour or you’ll see nothing but white rear ends.

If hunting with a rifle, an antlerless mule deer tag should be a walk in the park to fill using this method. Or if you aren’t up for a walk, just drive around and find one in the open. They aren’t very smart.
