Having elk close that last 50 yards... tips??
I was out elk hunting and bugled one in to 40 yards. He held up 40 yards away in some thick brush and starting raking and tearing apart a sapling, couldn't get him to come any closer and I couldn't move into a spot where I had a shot. I was aggressively bugling and he was screaming my ears off right back but just wouldn't come any closer, any tips for closing that last 50 yards??
I will be having elk dreams tonight

get a second guy calling for you and have him set up so you are between him and the bul.
If you cant get a second guy calling them you may try a decoy.

Face away from the Elk when you bugle, makes him think you're further away. I've seen elk do this themselves. It works when alone. The best way to do it is have a partner. Set the caller up 75 yards behind the shooter. The shooter doesn't make a sound and stays between the caller and screaming elk.

When his heads down raking move up he's not paying attention. You need to cut the distance when ever possible. Or start raking saplings as well to try and entice him for a fight. If your working as a team get off to the side or behind the shooter he's focused on you and not the guy at full draw.

Montana decoy, set back of you by 20 yards. Should get him within 20 yards when he spots the "Elk" that's talking to him....

This is a good tip and since a Montana decoy packs so easily into a pack it's no trouble to carry. Biggest pain is being quick enough and quiet enough to set up the poles .... Try what Fred Echler does have a couple alligator clips and paracord attached and just hang over a tree that way you can set up quick and quiet and move quickly if need be!!

Not sure....I won it at a banquet many years ago, thought I would actually use it this year.
No luck today but I did kick up a spiker in the dark and I did see a decent bull 500+ yards away and tried to make a play but no luck!

Cow call. I've called in more bulls using a cow call than a bugle.

I know exactly what you mean I find it hard that last short bit too, not sure where exactly to turn cuz its a difficult thing to get him in that last 70-50 yards.

Yup...I bought my hubbie 3 different ones as a package as a gift, and they are amazing..they even fool other hunters. So we hunt with them in bull only zones.
I bugle to identify bulls around, he goes in and does the chirping

Cows calls and if you choose to call any animal you can not do enough for scent control because they going downwind, i had a staring contest with a spiker yesterday at 10 yards and his bigger brother was hiding at 20 in the bushes coudnt count his points, then that spiker walked to my scent trail at that range and my day was over, but it was a good one

I had a bull do that to me in 2009. He was bugling about 100 yards away and wouldn't come any closer. That day was especially windy. I used the wind to my advantage to move within 50 yards of him. He couldn't hear me at all. I let a bugle out in his bedroom and within seconds he was running through the bush in my direction. He stopped at 10 yards in front of me looking all around. If windy use it to get places and close the distance.

I've called more using a bugle then a cow call! But I must admit once I can see it or know it's close, soft cow calls are the go to.
