Default Great start to the 2014 season

Got out tonight after chasing sharptails and working the check station the past few days.
Went to an area that I know holds some elk and deer. After poking around for a while I found a nice trail to sit for the evening. With about an 1hr to dark I see a bull elk coming down the trail. I look him over and while no monster he was a decent bull and figured I would arrow him. As he got into range I got ready and was just about to draw when the wind swirled a bit and he hit my scent cone. He turned around and headed off in a different direction. I watched for awhile and figured I knew where he was going so I decided I would work the new wind direction and cut him off. As I got about 100 yards from my spot I see two mule bucks headed down another trail. I looked them over and I really liked the one. So I swung around and ran about 1/4 mile and then tip toed thru some wolf willow to where I thought they were headed. As soon as I got there the one buck walked by…I waited for the other one. The smaller buck noticed me and was looking me over. The big guy stopped…I waited for a chance to range him. 47y yards so I figured if I got the shot I would take. He turned and I drew while getting up on my knees. Placed the pin on him and let it go. I heard it hit hard and off he went. As it was getting dark I tried to see where they were going and only one came out of the bowl. I watched as the younger one wouldn't leave…figured that was a good sign and went for a quick look in the bowl. There was my best archery mule buck in full velvet. What a beauty!

Great deer man! I got in on some elk both morning and night but no shot....saw a 160-170 inch white tail but he was 80 plus yards away....and I shot a coyote with the bow at 30 yards while on foot. Was a good opener!

Nice buck, the steaks will be a great addition to the freezer. Also should make a beauty of a mount.

Thanks guys. It wasn't hard to convince the wife to get him mounted as she loved the velvet! So he is being well looked after by Curtis at Silver Willow now. We taped him out at home and he went 183 1/2. Pretty happy with the start of 2014 for sure.

Congrats on a great deer !!! That first picture you posted is amazing also, I would be framing it and putting it on the wall with the deer.
