Default Thoughts on June Auction?

Now that my fur is in for the March auction it's time to decide what to do with the fur that I'm getting now. With the prices for coyotes doing so well I'm thinking that I want to get them to auction quick in case things change for next year. I'm just wondering what people's experiences have been and what fur generally sells for in the June auction. Anyone?

I sold fur in the May auction last year. Prices were a little softer but not too bad. I've been wondering whether to have them hold mine or sell in June as well.

I'd sure hate to wait until next year and have the market make a significant drop.

I do not believe in holding fur for any specific sale. If you have fur ready and a sale is coming up; ship it. IMO and experience you will average out better in the long run.

My point was that you never know which way prices will move. If I had a crystal ball and could tell the future I would know for certain which sale would be best.

I will most likely sell in June.

I believe h380 was agreeing with you.

Just agreeing with you tomcat ..lol . I was one of the " bright ones " that held my spring rats over from last year and sent them, to this Jan sale instead of selling them last May when they were worth something. Took a real bath on some nice hides that I shoulda sent earlier .

Tomcat, i know you have been trapping quite a while, interested in
sharing how many auctions you have seen over the years?
And the trends you may have noticed?

I have sold furs on the auction for 31 years. The trends I have notice is that the market goes up and down and your guess is as good as mine. Sell when you have the product and don't let it get stale.

I think the main reason the May sale is lower priced on coyotes is that the fur isn't as good on average. I got $168 for one last May. That said I'm betting there's going to be way more coyotes going into that spring sale once everyone sees higher prices from this last sale. If we triple the amount of hides at the sale then the price will be lower. Just my guess an I'm still putting my hides into that sale aswell

I don't think that there is a May auction this year. These are the only dates showing on the NAFA site:

Last Receiving Dates
January 19, 2015 for March-April 2015 Auction
April 20, 2015 for June-July2015 Auction
June 15, 2015 for September 2015 Auction

Just got my last 6 coyotes back from my skinner and gonna go against my own advice on holding over fur . Two are pale xxl 's and in very good condition . They are going to go to one of next years sales ,time will tell if it is a mistake . Figure 2 hides wont break me and might get lucky .

I'm going to wait to see what happens in the March auction. The last receiving date for the summer auction isn't until April 20 so there's a lot of time to decide what I'm going to do. I'm leaning towards putting my dogs in the summer auction and my Spring rats in for next winter.

Default Sale VS Sale.

I don't like to sell stale goods myself. Everything goes in as I finish putting it up. I for one am sure glad I sold my rats that way last year, and beavers in the years previous. My best average for rats and beavers has still been the June sales overall, with the January sales coming second. The good stuff still demands a high price. IMO

Me too. Prices for rats being what they are, I think that I will have NAFA hold them for me until January again though. I'm planning on trapping a significant amount of muskrat this Spring. Unless something drastic changes in the March auction, all of my dogs will likely go into the Summer auction.

Goofy year this year huh? A January sale that people actually shipped fur into that wasn't an internet sale, that real buyers actually showed up for in force, then no February sale in February, but a February sale in late March, then no May sale in May, but the May sale in June or July... very strange indeed!

Im just glad that there are droves of Chinese buyers back into the marketplace. It seems my crystal ball tells me that when the Chinese need fur they show up and buy what they want and drive prices up in the process, they buy what they need and go home. Then if they don't need it, they don't buy it and stay home??? Even if the market is full of bargains??? Last year was strange too with their absence, it wasn't all political, lots of guys were full of fur and empty on cash til they moved their product and now they need more stuff. I expect prices to climb on the stuff that is currently off. It'll be intesting to see what transpires.

Should be good Chinese dinner in Toronto this year!!!
