That isn't too bad when you figure UFA GP is 142.9. The spread is narrowing, except for all the other stations that are still 1.85.

Glad to hear it. I've seen other stations dropping down to 159.9 or so. There's still a few stubborn hold outs though, usually Petro Can.

Edm clear gas 141.0 at UFA. Interesting how Costco is now down to 144.9, but still lots of others at 179.9. Highest is 183.9 at Esso 167 and 118 ave. Yep, no price fixing, nothing to see here folks.

Back in early 2000, a buddy of mine owned a small gas station and convenience store. I remember him saying that he was making 2-3 cents per litre profit. He was making a living mostly from the sales from the convenience store and gas profit could barely pay for his utilities…. Now the stations are making 25-50 cents per litre of gas. They are making a killing!

The wholesale rack price is 133.4 this morning. That means if it retails at 179, and there are lots of stations at that and higher, they are making 45 cents a litre. uFa charges wholesale plus 6 or 7 plus trucking on clear gas. .

Something stinks in the gas biz
“The reason you are able to maintain prices with such a steep, unprecedented retail margin, suggests to me that there is a loss of competition at that level, and that’s a bigger question,” McTeague said. He points out that, including taxes, gasoline currently costs $1.32/L to buy wholesale. A normal margin would be 15 cents, he adds, meaning prices around 1.60 don’t make sense.
“That market reality in Edmonton would be $1.51 or $1.52 per litre,” McTeague said. “Gas stations are taking advantage of the public to the tune today of at least 20 cents a litre, and they ought to curb their enthusiasm, drop those prices.”

Quite a bit better, Ken.
A long time friend is an independent owner/operator of a station south of Calgary, right on hwy 2. He tells me he sees a minimum/average profit of .05/per liter which in his words is barely enough to cover extra wages with full service.

What I find interesting is if you look on Gas Buddy you will see a consistent pattern of guys posting UFA prices that are MUCH higher than actual. I am betting this is competitors trying to look better. One of them even goes by the handle UFAemployee, but there is no way that can possibly be true. I actually reported a couple of these SOBs to Gas Buddy. Hope they give them the boot.

UFA Lloydminster/Vermilion are run by the same owner, he says that .03c/l is the norm. My parents had UFA for 25 years and .02c/L was normal back in 1993.

UFA and Costco are the 'Only" honest and fair companies making good profit on backs of Canadians. The others especially 'Big Oil' are the ultimate examples of Pure Greed. EXXON/Chevron etc just posted their obsien profits over last few months.

Having the convenience store and liquor sales are where they make up for it I would imagine. They have quite a variety in that little store. Wall to wall. Hunting season really pulls in the customers he says as they also sell licenses/tags etc.

Are the refiners selling gas cheaper to UFA and Costco than all the others?

Wouldn't count on it. Houston has been the only place under 210 all summer.

Ordered a card online on Tuesday morning. Received it in the mail this morning. It says it is activated. I haven't paid the 5 dollars and I also haven't used it. I'll try tomorrow morning.
