Default Fox tail stripping

Got a couple foxes today and when I was stripping the tail on one of them the tip just fell apart!

Anyone else have that happen? I'm thinking the tip got frozen at one time because the skin just came apart and looked like powder.

Here's a couple of pics.

Had the same thing happen to me with the fox I got. But I always seem to rip half the tail off with yotes too! It is something that just never works for me, even with strippers/ and splitters!

I've had it happen too. Not sure what the cause is.

I too have had it happen with both fox and coyotes. Even had it happen with coons too. I don't know why though. I though I was just too rough with the fur.

It seems this is more common then I thought! I have also been told about a method to peel the tails with a small rope or a thick string, where you make a loop around the base of the tail, and pull the rope down, peeling the fur clean off the tail! Haven't tried it, but am going to on the next one. Good luck!

It looks like you guys are getting some freezer burn on the tail tips. If I am ever worried about freezer burn, I will soak the tails (last 6" or so) in water for 5-10 mins. They seem to pull out alot easier this way. Never had this happen to me, an old guy tought me that trick for weasels and squirrels.

This is not a problem of not strippng the tails properly - the tail lterally fell apart!! The end of the tail was dried right out and just fell apart!

It was not freezer burnt either as the fox were shot just before being skinned.

I would call a vet and ask if there is a canine mite, or some other kinda of condition that effects the skin.

I have seen this on a marten as well, tail and skin fall apart. Frostbite?
