For a computer that old, I would replace.
Pick up a decent laptop for under 500.

X2
It will have more ram, and be faster, etc...
I'm guessing that a hard drive would cost you a couple hundred installed, if not more. Give best buy a call for estimate to replace.

Time to upgrade I think as fixing it will cost u at least $250 in parts and labour. Pick up a new one from best buy for 450 bucks and it will last u another 5 years

Thank you for help. I think also is time for replace. I will check Best buy, Memory express and Costco as I know Costco offer extended warranty for free. Now I open Pandora box and asking your opinion what brand should I have to buy.

If tossing stuff out because it's a little bit old is an issue, I'm sure many of you should be in a home by now
Depends on the specs of the computer. If it was a cheap unit, probably best to replace it. If it's an I5 or I7, it could be worth repairing. You may get lucky and be able to clone the drive before it dies.
What's the model number of the computer?

Hard to say, it's an Athlon dual core CPU - which wasn't the fastest to begin with - and 4 gigs of memory. Your computer wouldn't be worth much in the long run. Hard drive will cost around $80, and if you're lucky enough to clone another drive before yours fails, it'll take a few hours to do so...

Buy Asus, Samsung, Sony, Dell or alienware. Also consider getting the Microsoft surface if it works for you ( as in u dont run heavy programs) I think the surface os one of the better units out there but its pricey

Get a 27‑inch iMac with Retina 5K display. It will completely change your life.

I have an iMac, 8 years old and still going strong. When it dies we'll probably replace it with an iPad.
We bought a cheap laptop at the same time for Herself's bookkeeping software, it has long since bit the dust.

A-computer at 11329 - 104 ave can put together something for you or might have refurbished in stock for substantially less that Best Buy - website: www.a-comp.ca - for generic desktop systems.

My old laptop was driving me nuts how slow it was, but is still worked, so I was not going to replace it.
Then a sale of a Lenovo Chromebook came on at BestBuy last month. At $147, it was a no brainer. I think it may have been a clearance, as the cheapest now is $219, and Lenovo is not one that is carried.
I was a bit skeptical at first, as most things are done in the cloud. Having owned it for a month now, there are very few things it can't do that normal Window/MacIntosh laptops can. There is even an off-line mode for your word processing, spreadsheets and email, so one does not have to be connected all the time.
Yes, I still keep my laptop around in case I need it for some specific issues. As example, there is no real FTP app for Chromebook, which can be an issue if your working on websites. But, all in all, it is my go to computer now. Love it, love the speed, love the price, love the battery live (8-10 hours!).

Another thing you can do for cheap is buy a hard drive and load up linux - get out of the windows world. Linux desktop is free. I've been using linux mint for the last couple of years, nice cross over for windows users. Linux opens a world of multimedia and such that you can't imagine on windows - and the majority of this wonderful software is free
I have never had a system crash using linux.
But yes, back up your hard drive if you can. If you do go with a new pc, drop your HP on kijiji minus hard drive for $50, someone will buy it.

Linux is a great system, and you can actually run it on a Chromebook also, as long as it has an Intel, not an ARM, processor.

My only suggestion (besides what's already been mentioned) is to get something with an HDMI output. You can then easily plug into any flat screen TV with one cable for audio and HD video. Makes downloading and playing movies on your big screen very simple, even watching videos that you've filmed yourself. Basically anything you can do on your laptop can be displayed on your TV.

Look at what you have.
Now look at what you want, or need?
If life was simple fire would be all that we need.

Its gonna be cheaper in the long run to just buy a whole new computer.
Bring your old one into a computer service place, and hopefully they can salvage your documents or anything you need off of it and put it on your new one.
Sucks to buy a brand new one, but nowadays anything older than a couple of years is pretty much obsolete
