It depends on preference, plenty of threads describing different makes and models on the site in last ~3 weeks.

Price depends on new or used, and make/model/size/hp.
Anywhere from about $250-700.

My husband and I own a 3 hp Jiffy, purchased in '08. Out of factory it had its issues with maintaining an idle between drilling holes. Turned out it just needed a new spark plug. No issues since. Drills through ice like a hot knife through butter. Fantastic blades.
It depends what kind of fishing you're into. I would recommend an 8inch flight if you are planning to catch walleye or whitefish or perch. Sometimes the hook slips out of the fish's mouth and are left mid-way in the hole. Most times the fish cannot turn around in this diameter of hole and end up swimming up the hole instead.

If you fish lots get the Husqvarna. ... best auger I have used. . Not cheap though. I seized my jiffy in 2 seasons. Try and get a older jiffy with tecumseh engine and made of metal if you go that route.

Yes, ours has the metal case and shroud. I heard Husqvarnas are good too!!

I bought a z51 Eskimo the end of last year for 315.00 on sale. Man that thing hauls through the Ice with a 8 inch bit. If interested in 10 inch the z71 would be your best bet, even though the 51 has the option.

Pulled my 4 year old Eskimo out of the shed yesterday. Last years gas and fired up, first pull. Can get about 2 - 3 days fishing, lots of holes on one tank of gas. Get a 10" and you will be more than happy. If you go the gas route, use fuel stabalizer, shell premium gas and a little bit of seafoam in your gas. Look for sales as prices can vary greatly for the same models. Got mine from Costco back then. $ 300.00 1 gallon of gas lasts me all year and some, and I drill a dozen holes each outing.

Im on season 5 with my 10" 5 cc Eskimo gas auger. Hasn't let me down yet.

I also picked up a 6" Finbore III for days where I don't want to lug around the gas motor. It just eats through the ice.

I've been using my eskimo stingray 33cc for 4 years now. No problems at all, starts on 1-3 pulls. Doesn't go as fast as others but honestly I don't need to get through the ice in 5 seconds flat. Was the cheapest on the market at the time, paid $260 if I remember.

Cant go wrong with an eskimo. We had one from the 60's, still starts first or second pull, cuts good to. I upgraded a couple years ago to the eskimo z71 10 inch, that thing has power and torque, theres no auger on the market that compares. It cuts super fast, if youre standing on bare ice, make sure you got cleats on because the torque will spin you. That being said, it is a tank and weighs as much as one to. The only complaint I have is the weight, super heavy. I bought a strikemaster Honda four stroke 8 inch for perch and eyes because I do a lot of running and gunning for them. If im out for pike or lakers, the z71 will definetly still be my choice.

If you plan on fishing with small children,,, 10'' and bigger augers scare me!

I have the Eskimo Stingray 8",,, great auger, easy starting, quick drilling and can often be found for decent price.

Saw a really old guy snap his leg clear off at the hip in a 10" hole.
Wasnt that much blood though, he had poor circulation at that age.

Turns out we had to give him a leg up.



edit: Guy in our group got a really big pike shortly after, pike swallered the mans leg it did. Pike really put a foot in its mouth that time.

Use caution on the ice, easy to put a foot in a ten inch hole.

Going on 4 seasons with my 8" Eskimo. For instance, the badger lake derby the last 3 years with temps in the minus 40's and colder, 3-5 pulls and it was running. Cuts nice and quick, and is pretty light weight. Price vs performance was the biggest factor. I was all about getting the new jiffy(not hating on jiffy by any means) but have heard and read horror stories about them not wanting to idle or start due to carb issues, and the propane ones are just too much money.
