Default Do I Need an Intervention?

Help! I don't feel like hunting....

Due to a career change and being away, last season was the first time I didn't even buy tags in over twenty seasons.

In the previous three years, I set, then achieved some lofty personal goals.

Big mulie with the bow. Check.
First WT with a bow. Check.
First bow kill with my son beside me. Check.

In those years and ever prior, I was fortunate enough to spend 40-60 trips afield per year.

Putting meat in the freezer was vitally important from a financial perspective.

Things are different now. The new job has meant not having to worry about a full freezer for the winter. Got a little time on my hands these days. Both 'Shrubs' are in a new school and minor hockey. Taking a year away has seen my spot filled on my main hunting permission. Permission 'B' has been hijacked, and my lone remaining 212 spot is small and darn near impossible to hunt.

Probably going to bring the rifle out of retirement, but we'll see.

Problem is, I don't really care.

I took the kids out the other night for a sit. None of us were into it.

What's wrong? Is this normal?

Any advice is welcomed.

Tree, every thing changes. I know exactly how busy you are.
How ever, I am in the midst of a 10-12 day hunt in northern Alberta with Willy.
Tonight, he took his first bear. That put a bunch of fun back into the game.

Another thing is to try a new avenue... Perhaps birds? Get a trained lab and you will never look back.

Or....... Spend more time at the rink. Lolololol

Go with it , people change their priorties as they get older and there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe one day you will get back at it or even change from big game to upland as a way to relax not to fill the freezer.

Or enjoy upland amd simply fill the freezer with a legal whatever!

Right on Willy! Too cool.

Things do change. That's for sure. Perhaps it's a funk or a bit of relief about not having to worry about a full freezer.

As for birds. Nope. It means using shotguns and I have a bit of a personal phobia about them.

it'll just a priority change for you , now you have the kids and a well paid job as the more important thing in life and hunting is optional recreation .. take a break from it. When you get tired of the jobs and the concrete jungle, you'll want to hit the outdoor again.

Can I have your North permission? I'll promise to evict everyone else on there, and do all the scouting , and set you up on a big old muley when your ready..just need you to get me in there ...LOL just kidding

Everything goes in cycles buddy. I would stress to much. Your new life style, and older shrubs, are giving a different out look , and needs from life. You are who you are and when the time is right the passion for hunting will come back.

Sometimes a little abstance makes the heart grow fonder. Or when the shrubs sstart showing the passion, you'll get the bug again.

Maybe it's thae game your after? A good goose hunt with the shrubs might change it as well.

Heck if you need I'll take you out....( to one of my spots)

Good Luck

I can relate to you, I use to spend the whole year preparing for the hunt, maps, spotting trips learning patterns of the area I was going to, lots of trips to the rifle range ect... basically when I was not working I was preparing for hunting or hunting. Now could care less if I go, if it was not for my son showing such a strong interest in hunting I would be just as happy going ice fishing.

They must make a pill for that...

I'll go out on a limb here...reading between the lines it sounds like the new job is giving with one hand and taking with the other.

More money... less time... maybe more stress.

That can be a joy kill.

Maybe its just that you were more focused on need than recreation before and now see hunting as more work than pleasure...

Well...you can't force it so I guess the thing to do is ride it out and see where it ends up.
Things usually have a way of working themselves out in the end....if you don't force it too much.

yes you need intervention .. QUICK you have a bad case of Male Menopause.. it hits every male about your age ..you need too get out of the house and relieve the stresses of life by doing what you love still underneath it all. as a male you need to beat your chest and yell once in a while (just do in bush).. the meat you harvested is the best in Alberta .. no pun to the meat issue..

in the end have some fun fun fun there is more to hunting than the hunt
