Nice set of knives! With the knife makers in Canada, and in this province, I sure would not go stateside at all! Yes the top knife would do it all for sure, but you might as well try them both, and have both probably cost less than a knife out of the U.S.A. Congrats.

[kQUOTE=sns2;4686127]Here a pic of the set of knives that will ride in my bag. Truth is the top knife will do it all, and very nicely, but Clint Chisan makes damn nice knives. No need to go stateside I tell you that.

With exchange, shipping and duty, there is a considerable savings advantage. The above knives are perfect in terms of craftsmanship. Not a single flaw to be found.

That has been a nice thing. Couple guys wondering who in the hell would spend $200 on a knife Beyond that, it’s been smooth sailing. Nice for a change.

That is a really nice matching set. How long are the blades on those beauties?

Looks like Clint has been busy

I cannot overstate how pleasant it is dealing with him.

Finally. Spyderco Southfork.

Been on the hunt for one of these for a long time. Jumped at the chance when it came on the EE. This will be my go to knife. Imo the shape and feel are perfect for me.

Nice score! Looks like a winner. There is a guy on Bladeforums, and he is a deep see fisherman. He put that knife through hell and back, and loved it. My prediction is you will really like it. It is for all intents and purposes the exact profile of a knife Badbrass has by Dan Crotts. Congrats!

That is a really nice looking blade there. Seems like that blade would be useful for many different tasks. Also a little side note. Up until recently I have never had any experience with Kydex sheaths and I am really starting to enjoy using them. Has anyone ever heard of one being made for a Buck Vanguard?

Santa got me this from our own Phil M. It's a beauty! Only service so far has been trimming a brisket for the smoker.

Dual sheaths is because son is a lefty and hope is one day he inherits it!

I’m sure a knife maker can make you one up!

I think you will have to send your knife to them to do it. But?

Very nicely built knife, very pretty to look at, comfortable in the hand, light and easy to maneuver. It however does NOT live up to its reputation for being an edge so long lasting you can do more than one animal without touching it up. Maybe 2 deer, but on moose, if you split the hide and hair, you are going to need to touch it up before you start working on the meat and skinning. Elk it holds up a bit better but their hide and hair are not as hard on an edge as Moose.

I also find the short blade a bit of a handicap on larger animals, works fine on deer, but moose could use a little longer cutting edge. The Buck 110 is just enough longer to make the difference, but to be fair I have used a 110 as my primary hunting knife for nearly 50 years.

Below is a picture of a Buck 110 made with S30V beside the Crotts. The one in the picture is for show as my wife gave it to me for our 35th wedding anniversary in 2017, we hit the 40 year mark in 2022, but I have an identical knife without the engraving I hunt with. We did a bull moose using these two blades. The Buck did the majority of the work, including splitting hide and hair as well as separating sockets and cutting cartilage. I intentionally did not touch up either knife during the process of breaking down that moose. The Buck was noticeably sharper at the end of the job than the Crotts was. When you consider that you can get a Buck 110 in S30V for about a quarter of the Crotts, seems like a much better deal to me.

Thanks for the update and the honest review of your experience with the Crotts Dean! I have a not as nice 110 with the S30V, and am not surprised by your findings in the comparison.
My Crotts has the CTS XHP steel, but far less experience than yours this past year, a few birds and a deer, holds a great edge and is nice to use as it is a very functional design. If someone wants to spend the money it’s a great knife to own and use, I’ll be keeping mine. That said my old carbon Grohmann #1 that needs a couple swipes on a steel to be back to super sharp after dressing a deer works great and I never really thought or found its edge retention to be a problem.

Cheers!

I was asking Clint about a trout and bird knife earlier this year, never made up my mind until I saw this last night….. emailed him and have one on order now…..I better go though my collection and thin down the herd…. Love the looks of this, can’t wait to get it and try it out! I asked Clint to do mine up to match the one he made for me about a year ago. Brown Micarta and orange liners.

Man, I love that knife!

Not really a contender in this thread, but just wondering if anyone has ever seen a Mora like this one? The spine must be 3/16" thick, and it originally had a very dramatic, upswept skinner point. I found it at a garage sale, paid $5 for it, and promptly re-profiled the tip for a better field dressing blade. It obviously still has plenty of belly for skinning. To date I have never been able to even find pictures of a Mora like it though, so altering it was possibly a mistake. If you want to pack a hunting knife that can handle some hard use in an emergency, this knife in its current form is tough to beat.

Ken, you are gonna absolutely love this knife. It is the bees knees. I am so happy with mine. He did a great job on capturing the design. Extremely versatile. I wondered how long it would be before Clint gets an order for one. Can’t wait to see the pics.

Prinny53 asked me to post some pics for him. He got a Magnacut boning knife from Clint last summer. Anyhow, since I last sharpened it, he has cleaned a slug of geese, few briskets and a few pork shoulders. His group got 4 late season elk of which he skinned one, and today he said he processed at least a full elk at their processing party. At the end it was finally needing a sharpening. That right there my friends is damn impressive, and in 15 mins I’ll have it shaving arm hair again. Clint Chisan makes a fine knife.

I am having Clint build me a boneing knife out of magnacut as I have been looking for a quality one for butchering. As well he is building me a cleaver
I haven’t been able to find a old one that I like so I sent Clint a picture and asked if was interested in building me a cleaver.
He sent me a sketch from one of the pictures I sent him.
Looking forward to it. Metal will be 80crv20. 5/16 thick
